what did you shoot today?

Didn't shoot yesterday, cleaned rifles! Carbon rings now gone, bores look good, cleaned crown where the tuner lets carbon accumulate (that's a booger!). Now ready to shoot again, may go to TN on the first Saturday of the month, Dry Branch is ALWAYS a test for wind reading!!

you clean your guns? j/k. cardboard, construction paper, paper plates, empty two-liters filled with sand/gravel for a weighted base. no cans as i didn't have time to raid the recycle bin. started as usual with .22 and worked my way up to the larger calibres. all revolvers, lever-action rifles, shotgun. no semi-autos. going to be scorching so plenty of water, gator-aide, etc.

only colonial era guns. flintlocks, smoothbore musket, etc. made an awful din but was fun. also took discarded foam, tacked it to a sturdy base, and let 'em rip. only downside was the cleaning. lol.

Between the sun setting and mosquitoes coming out. I checked zero at 100 yards with a new thermal scope on 223 AR. First 2 went in the same hole, so I held slightly low, left. The insulation pipe tape makes a good daytime thermal target. 2" wide cut down the middle. IMG_20240720_205605643.jpg

I love black powder percussion revolvers. I own two, a 1851 Colt Navy and a 1860 Colt Army, both Uberti reproductions.
Last trip to the range I shot the 1860 Army at clay birds on the berm at around 120 yards. I didn’t hit one but I scared a couple.
Wilson Combat Protector in .45ACP. Super accurate.

"Wife and I spent the morning shooting Springer air rifles. We are home to lunch then out to a favorite farm that just finished their second cutting yesterday. Look out Chuckle, you better duck.

USBR 25 yard target with my CZ 457 Varmint with Bushnell 6 X 28 scope @ 9 power.
Caldwell Rock front rest with Protektor bag and Protektor rear bag.
Scored a 240 5 X. Tough target. The wind didn't help me much with 8 - 10 mph from the East. I never adjusted for wind, just moved the crosshairs.

I didn’t shoot today, but had the neighbor’s son over to learn all about the AR. He’s soon off to the Air Force, and I thought it would be good if he familiarized himself with the rifle. He quickly picked up on how to dismantle and clean the BCG. I showed him mag loading and cartridge seating, and mag release and such as that. Then off to my 100 yard range, with a small sack of reloads. He shot off the bags and did very well, then shot offhand (using the sling), which turned out much better than I expected. Then he shot with his left hand braced and the rifle resting on it. He was really good.

I learned from my grandfather (WW1 shooting instructor), which was pretty much the same as I got in the Marines, and I passed along the basics and the little things that matter. He says he’ll tell them he learned it from an old Marine in Texas. It was fun for me and way better than shredding pasture.

I shot .22 rimfire today; lot testing for my new CZ 457 MTR. I picked the two best lots of Eley black box (Match) for ordering more. 5-shot groups were in the .3's and .4's for the entire 50-round box on both lots. This will enable my foray into ARA Factory Class.

I shot my AR at Whitecar Range on Wednesday. Mine has a BCA 16" upper on it with a Primary Arms 1-8 mounted. It shot about an inch and a half with my 55 grain loads. Can't complain.

My daughter (Ten years old) shot a Browning Buckmark, and a Bersa .380 (Pink of course). I can't complain.

Not today but tomorrow a UBR match at BGSL in Wilmore, KY think I'll shoot the 30BR in Unlimited. Wish me luck!

Yesterday at the public range I shot my S&W M57, M25 and Rock Island std 1911. I was surprised with the RI it shoots a lot better than my G35 Glock. But it only likes 230gr ball so far. The M57 has an 8 3/8 barrel and it shoots really well. The M25-2 is one from the early 80s and the throats are way too big so it’s really not one of my favorites.

Shot two Colt SAA's in 357, a Winchester 1873 in 357 and a Winchester 1897.
If you haven't guessed yet I shot a cowboy action match.....just like every weekend!

I recently resurrected a Model 70 .223 WSSM with a new Douglas barrel. Been fighting major pressure issues and trying different powders. Today it was IMR4350 & VV-N555 sparked by CCI #34 & FGM primers and Nosler 55 grain Varmageddons. The 4350 loads with Federal primers gave stiff bolt lift at anything over 46 grains. Accuracy was so-so. N555 with #34 primers showed much lower pressure and very good velocity. 46.4-46.7 grains gave virtually the same velocities averaging about 3820 fps with SD's in the single digits. Accuracy hovered around MOA. I'm getting there........

Well, today was an unusual day, first shot in the 3 minute relay was on #6 target, that's about 8" right of where it should have been!! Called the match director over and told him I had a round in the chamber and he said to clear it so I shot and now I have 2 rounds touching the #6 target! Dang! They score it as a zero even though when I finally adjusted the scope during the match I did shoot an 11 on that target all for naught. So aggravated after that when we went to 200 I didn't even put out flags still shot 244, still won the agg in unlimited........................only one shooting LOL rest of the guys were shooting custom.
