What cleaning supplies to buy and where to buy them.

I am ditching all my old cleaning supplies. I got a kit from a relative when I was just getting started.

I now am talking shooting more serious and am shooting nicer rifles. I will be shooting 6br, 22-250 and 223.

From my research, correct me if I'm wrong.

6br bore guide
22cal bore guide.
Nylon coated cleaning rod.
Copper or some type of wire brush
Jig for cleaning patches.

I do have some kg2 bore polish.

Please let me know recommendations on models and any other needed tools/cleaning supplies and where the best place would be to get them all.

I prefer Dewey coated rods and Parker hale type jags. I buy these from Sinclair international. I buy bore guides from them too. They make excellent bore guides.

I like the Brownells 12 packs of bronze brushes, especially when they have the female thread so the Dewey just screws right in.

I am a Butches Bore Shine guy, but have also used Bore Tech Eliminator (no smell which makes the bride happy), Shooters Choice, and lately I have been using some Wipe out. i will buy Patch Out next time, easier to apply. I like it for soaking my hunting guns over night, clean in the morning next day. I use Brownells for this stuff.

I use patches from Sinclair (BTW, Brownells owns Sinclair)

I have on hand some JB paste and some Kroil, for guns that pass thru that need a good clean out, but seldom use it. System does work, but i don't use it cause it makes a mess.

I use a cheap Cabelas bench vise, and it really does help hold the gun for scrubbing. Not sure how I got by before it.

Make sure you get rods long enough to reach...not just barrel, but I like to have some extra so it clears the stock too. Hate banging against the high comb stocks.

If you are just shooting 6mm and 22, you can buy one rod, 22 cal. Get the long one. buy bronze brushes. Some guys like nylon...I prefer bronze. i have used both, just a preference.

You will get a lot of different advice. But you can't go wrong as long as you use a bore guide, buy quality stuff, and make sure you never clean from the bore...always the breach, assuming a bolt gun. Be careful with the crown, treat it with gentleness and care.

I am sure others will chime in. BTW, Brownells has a military and Law enforcement discount, last I looked, if that helps.

Check all this out on Brownells web site. Even if you buy elsewhere, they have a nice list to look over.

Oh, and don't mix bore solvents. BAd things can happen with "mixing". Find something you like and stick with it.

I got everything I ever needed for all the calibers I clean for at Sinclair's. My advice.....don't cheap out . Get the good bore guides and get the best of rods. I use 4 rods as of now.......one with a jag and one with a brush for 22, 243, 264. and another set for .277 and up. Simply saves time!! I use Butches, Sweets, IASSO, and Wipe out and assorted sizes of patches. I also have bolt disassembly tools for Remington and my older BAT's. I baught a bunch of plastic jag/brush holding boxes for each caliber. Several jags and a dozen brushes for each caliber. A few squeeze bottles, a few different bore plugs, and two tool boxes to store everything. Probably left a few things out.

Keep care of it and all you will ever need to buy again is repalcement brushes, patches and solvent for the rest of your life.

Good luck,
Tod
