What Chamber for a very short action

Hello Guys

I have been lurking and reading your wonderful trove of information here, and I have garnered a few thoughts but I’d like hear your opinions directly on a project I’m about to undertake.

I’m seeking suggestions for a cartridge that has a .473 bolt face and will fit a mag box length of 2.71 (69 mm) - the 308 family of cartridges are too long. I’m looking for something that will launch fairly high BC projectiles of between 130 and 150 gns. So cartridges in the 6.5 and 7mm range look optimal.

My dilemma is wether to chamber in a wildcat (if so what) or factory (the options down here in NZ appear to be 6.5x47L or 300 Savage).

In order to keep the costs in check for a wildcat round I was looking at the approach used to develop the 6mmX – as I understand it run the chamber reamer in short by about .130 (3.3 mm) and trim the bottom off a F/L die.

Could I do this with either a 260 Rem or 7mm08 – has anyone tried it and if so what were the results?

Thanks - Foster

My bad, I was thinking of what would fit in his action more. 6BRX with 115's still wouldnt be much to sneeze at comparing to a 6.5x47L and 130's.

As a hunter, the 300sav is an excellent cartridge. lots of bullets to sellect from and easyto load, no case work just load and shoot, plus factory ammo is usually around.

or the 30x44//30x47 family of "Hunter" class ctgs....very accurate--lots of dies available--load data abounds--and lots of good 30 cal hunting and target bullets,,,,Roger

And right along those lines, the 6.5mm and 7mm BR would be interesting, with better BC bullets (at the cost of being more of a wildcat).

either a 260 Rem or 7mm08 is in the 308 family of cartridges

suggested above.. is either 6.5x47 l or the 30X47 which would be really neet
you said for hunting... but not size of animal or distance

if you wanted to go off the wall... i could amagine something like .277x47.. lol's
maybe there already is one ?

just2more cents

Greertings from Dunedin Tentman. Is this for a rem model7 by any chance? If so i would say 6.5 creedmore, or if you want to wildcat 7mm creedmore, or even 7mm creedmore improved. Thsi would give you similar performance to a .260 or 7-08 in a 100 thou shorter case, if you were careful not too order too much freebore on the reamer it would give you a short OAL

I am running a 7mm saum shortened 200 thou in a model 7 and after a lot of goofing around it is working well. I have a 2nd model 7 in 7-08 and I would go 7mm creedmore or 7mm creedmore improved if rebarreling to get a shorter round.

Ha - Small world, I know a lot of shooting folk from Dunners (Chaz, Franz et al !!).

My action is a Mauser Kurz, hence the funny mag box size, and some people have pretty definite ideas about the pressures one should run in a small ring Mauser . . even if it is a 98 and of the "modern" era (mine is 1923)

Do you know of any "improved" reamers about the place ?

I also have to get a barrel, I know dear old Din has a good 6.5 and a 30 cal, we had a long talk today as 300 Savage is still a possibility.

Cheers - Foster

I belong to the Bruce club and know Chaz, he has helped out legions of shooters down here. I know of no reamers sorry but I suspect someone in NZ must have a creedmore reamer?

Isn't the Kurz action the correct length for the classic 250 Savage cartridge? Great hunting cartridge that you could even AI for extra performance. The 250AI treads close on the heals of the 25-06!

Tentman -

Howdy !

Outside the box....

A stock 7 X 64 Brenneke remaer can be run-in " short ", to obtain a 7mm wildcat chamber,
w/ a nominal .455" base diam.

.35 Remington brass is utilized, which is workable in a rifle w/ a standard .308 bolt face & good extractor.

Both the .35Rem and 7X64 have near identical case taper rates, quite similar shoulder angles; and virtually the same neck lengths ( within a couple thousandths of an inch ).

7X35Rem forms easily as squeezing butter in you hand. To form sample 7 X 35Rem cases,
I utilized a Redding 7X64 " forming " die.

Such a project requires NO custom reamers; and NO custom dies.
A Hornady universal-type bullet seater would work just fine.
A stock .35Rem FL die could be impressed into service as a " shoulder bump " die; etc.

Case capacity would be a tad less than a 7 X 08

With regards,

An existing

357.....

which would have the advantage.. A stock 7 X 64 Brenneke or the made 7 X 35Rem... ?/?

never took notice to that cartridge before interesting at that ...

hornaday sell new brass a buck a pc. for the 7x64
