What causes squeak

I have a Broughton 5C barrel and when I go to start a second patch,( first one wet with solvent) the second patch is a little difficult to start and when it begins to go its tight and squeals as if its bone dry. Is this carbon build up ? IF not whats up because rifle has stopped shooting groups like it used to.

thanks, Chief

Either your patch is alittle too big or do you brush it after it is soaked.I have had the same thing happen, when I brush it with a soaked brush in you favorite cleaner,it makes a big difference. Not all the patches are cut to the exact size you need and I trim them down so they dont bend the rod just to push them through the bore.

Well I forgot to mention after the second patch is pushed thru #'s 3, 4, and so on no problem using same size patch . Yes I brushed after first wet patch and added solvent to brush also. But I will use your advise and try smaller patch to see if goes away. Oh I also use the VFG pellets (round barrel keg looking felt) with the same procedure and get the squeak.

rod does not bend either.

I don't really have an answer for you but my 284 does the same thing to me but not all the time. I like to think of it as squeaky clean. Keep it up u are doing something right.

Honestly though no clue, doesn't seem to be hurting anything though right?

Years ago there was a bore cleaning solvent known as "Accu-Bore". It did a great job of removing carbon fouling but it squeaked when pushing a soaked patch through the bore. I haven't seen anyone using it since the late 80's, early 90's.

try polishing the first 2-3" of barrel with iosso or jb bore paste. your throat is probably beginning to get rough

Chief,

I have the same problem when using a copper solvent. First one goes fine and if I push the second or subsequent patches through quickly it's ok. If I wait any length of time, the barrel feels dry and they're difficult to push through. Good luck.

Well treeman JB paste seemed to do the trick. No more squeaking after polishing the throat area. Now to shoot and see if my groups tighten up.
