what cartridge & gun????

Wanting some suggestions for cartridge from antelope to moose. I've thought about 7 mag in Rem 700 or I have a donor action if needed to build. I know I'm asking alot out of one gun.,7STW?)

Now that is what I call a tall order, antelope to Moose! I found that a 25/06 was about perfect after trying 7 Mag, 270, 25/06, and 243 and I would rather opt for a 243 instead of a 270 on antelope. The antelope are not hard to kill at all, even at 500 yards with a 243.

You could have a switch barrel long acton Remington 7oo and shoot a 243 or 25/06 on antelope, then switch over to a 30/06 on Moose.

There are dozens of switch barrel combo's that will work.

I just remembered one load that I used to shoot in my 700 7 Mag on antelope that duplicates a 25/06 that is very accurate: 59.0g of IMR 4350 with the 120g Sierra @3000 fps, very mild on antelope. Then you could load a much heavier bullet for the Moose.

Sounds like this fantasy is on steroids! Hee Hee!

I would have to say the good old 30-06 Springfield.

No doubt the perfect "all around" big game caliber.

Just my two-cents worth.

You can certainly do it with the 7mm Rem mag.

Never have shot at a moose, but took a nice size 6x6 bull elk with one shot from my little old 7mm Rem mag, using a handloaded 175 grain Nosler Partition at 2930 fps. The quick kill and complete penetration leads me to believe the same combo would work well on moose too.

Smaller stuff? The 7mm Rem mag works just fine there too. :) A guy could likely do it all with the 160 grain bullet at around 3000 - 3100 fps, but I really like those long, heavy, deep-penetrating 175 grainers.

Or, yeah, you could do it with a good old .30-06 too. I've long since come to the conclusion that where ya hit 'em is a lot more important than what ya hit 'em with - as long as the bullet is up to the job.

Regards, Guy

Be prepared for extensive meat damage with a 7 Mag on an Antelope. I don't know what it is about a 7 Mag but they really tear em' up.
Go for a lung shot, it will anchor em and not tear up any good meat.

Thanks for your time and appreciate your input. I'm soon moving to Wyoming and was curious if I would be better off with a BDL or Sendero? Was thinking the lighter BDL would be easier to lug around.

I use to own a 7mm Savage and sold it for the same reason as Twud said-too rough on Blacktail/Antelope size animals.

You can load down that 30-06 to take Cues Deer with a 110 grain bullet or drop a Grizzly with a 220 grain round. Between 110 and 220 grains nothing in North America is safe!

Not to mention you can buy almost every type of 30-06 or at least 150 or 180 grain ammo at any Mom & Pop Shop.

I also agree with M700

“Place it right and it will drop”.

BDL-Sendaro-ADL-DM, whatever is best for you.

The 7 mag is an excellent all around cartridge and with the right bullet and shot placement, should'nt cause too much meat damage. If it were me however, I would go for a custom barrel chambered in 280AI or 30-06AI. The 280AI will almost equal the 7mag velocities and the 30-06AI will equal 300H&H velocities. Both the Ackley versions will do it burning less powder, with less recoil.

It's already been suggested, so here's another vote for the .30-06. I have used it with success on antelope, whitetail, mule deer, and elk at ranges of 50 yds to 450 yds, whitetail, not elk). It will handle moose with a 180 gr Partition or 220 gr. round nose. I've hunted with other guys and the 7mm RM, same result as the .30-06, but more powder and more meat damage.

Go with the old 06' and a 150gr Nosler Balistic tip for antilope/deer and a 180gr partition for moose and your set.Im not a fan of the 270,280,or 7mm but they will do the trick. For less damage go with the 06'
