What caliber?

Let me start by saying that I'm no rookie to this crazy sport.

I'm torn on the caliber I'm leaning towards....therefor I won't mention what that is. I will be clanging steel from 100 yards to 1200 yards. I'm looking for the most ACCURATE round that will provide the following, while still keeping great accuracy.

1. Good barrel life. (more than 1000 rounds)
2. Good Accessibility of reloading supplies.
3. Doesn't have such a violent recoil.

Must be able to fit in a short action.

Being a non rookie, you could put just about any of the short action cartridges on pieces of paper , put them in a hat, and pull one out.... Bingo... you would have your lucky winner....

That is about where I'm at!

I would look closely at the 6.5 Creedmoor and the 243 or the shorter version Creedmoor necked down which is essentially a 250 savage necked down to 6mm. Depending on the weight of the platform lots of cartridges to choose from.

If you mean it has to feed from a short action, then my beloved 260 Remington may not be the best choice. With 140 class bullets the overall cartridge length needs to be in the 3" range to keep the heel out of the doughnut area.

I am having a whole lot of fun banging steel with my 6-6.5x47L with the 105H and 108 BT.

I have a 6.5WSSM and a 6.5-284, but usually grab my 6mm.

Good luck and have FUN,

Tod

6.5 Creedmoor is a great choice for a rookie in that you can get excellent high B.C. bullets in factory loaded mag. length cartridges if you don't reload (or get caught in a situation where you don't have any reloaded ammo). It is very capable out to 1200yds. The old venerable .243 also fits that bill just with much shorter barrel life and less long range factory loadings.
