What caliber would you recommend?

I have a 6.5 Creedmoor Savage all factory rifle, it is a Cabela’s model 10 with a bottom bolt release. Not happy with its accuracy performance even with reloads. The main purpose would be steel at 1000 yards or shorter. Thinking of getting and new barrel put on and possibly changing the caliber. I have a couple of 6mm Creedmoor, 243 Win and 6.5 prc. Prefer a light recoiling cartridge that can easily go the distance at sea level.
What would you say would be a good new caliber or should I stay with the original 6.5 Creedmoor. Will be reloading for any caliber choices.

Sell, the Savage and Buy, a Tikka in 6.5 Creed, 24 inch BBl., or, .223 or,.. .22-250 ( 1-8 Twist ) Both have, LOW Recoil.
All 3 Cart's,.. are VERY, Accurate, in a Tikka, Factory Rifle !
The NEW Savage, Ultra Lite's, in 6.5 PRC with PROOF Barrels, ARE great BUT,.. some of the "others",. ???
NOT so much !

1. Light recoiling, 6mm's (put a brake on)
2. At sea level, need a 7.5 twist with 103g and heavier bullets.
The 6.5 is plenty accurate, maybe not up to your standards in your current configuration.
Have a new barrel chambered for a caliber you think you can find
all the reloading items necessary to shoot it.
This is cheaper than going to a full build with action, barrel and stock.
They make factory brass for quite a few great calibers now.
It's getting a little easier to find powder, primers and some bullets
if you are not too picky. Brass and dies are still an issue with some.

For the Price of, a New, Gunsmith installed Barrel, you can almost Buy, a WHOLE New, Tikka Rifle.
Unless you're building, a Benchrest or, a "Special use" Rifle, WHY,.. Bother ??
Sell yours, ADD a Couple of, bucks and,.. HAVE,.. Fun
Tikka actions, are Smooth, Barrels Precise / ACCURATE and for $10 - $20.00, a New Trigger Spring = WOW !
I'm still liking, the 6.5 Creed for an, "All Around, Rifle" cartridge #1 choice, ( #2 - .223 Rem ) in a TIKKA !
Low Recoil, Accurate, cheap Ammo and can reach,. OUT !

Just learned that this rifle has an accu-stock. That means if I wish to use a new standard recoil lug, I would need to change out the stock or use a stamped accu-stock recoil lug vs a ground one. Don’t want the added expense of a new stock, but don’t want to affect the rifle accuracy. Thoughts?

I can’t answer your second question, but as for the first one, I would say either go with a 22 creed, as suggested, and from who suggested it, or a 7-08AI.

@ 22vartag,..
I'd carefully, "Square up" the REAR side of, the Stamped, recoil Lug on, a Flat Surface ( W/ 240 then 400 Grit ) then, Glass Bed it with, a thin piece of, Tape under Bottom and Front side of Lug, so that, gun comes apart when Desired.
The Lug done this "Way", should work Fine,.. UN-Less, a Heavy recoiling, Cart used

You didn't say what kinda of accuracy you are looking for.

My first Savage 12, 6.5 CM would give me 4" groups at 600 yds with my reloads. Shot the factory barrel out and rebarreled, re stock, bedded, pillard, replaced the trigger (the only thing factory is the receiver).
With the above I was shooting 6" at 1000 yds.

Since I wanted to get into "F" class shooting on 600 yds, I bought a used Savage 12, in 6.5 CM. After doing my ladder testing an finding out what it liked, I can get 10" groups at 1000 yds and 4-5" at 600 yds. This gun was left factory condition, no bedding or pillering.

Don't know what your load is or was but I have found that both 6.5's like 140gr, ELD match and H4350 powder and a velocity of 2650 - 2690 FPS.

I would not give up on the Savage yet.
