What caliber would you choose to replace .17 Remington and why?

416 Barrett might have to open up bolt face a little..... or 221 furball you can still get Lapua brass for them, and they punch up alot better then they should...I had a 17 rem in a 700 at one time and it shot well but I had to clean it about as much as I shot it.... If I was going to have a 20 cal it would have to be the vartarq for me....

I have owned a really nice Remington 700 chambered in .17 rem for some years. Ammo and components are not easy to find. I’m pondering changing barrels to a simpler round. I already load .223, .260, .270, 7mm, .308, and 30’06. Since it has a small bolt face, .223 is the obvious choice. But, something different would be fun. Maybe I could find something that I could find ammo on the shelf and components easily. Not looking to build competition gun exactly. I already have a few of those. I‘d like to have a fun very accurate plinker.

One option would be to sell it and buy something else, bu5 you don’t see ones this nice very often.

What would you build for a “fun” gun?
Made my 17 Rem a 17-223 . Yoyes dont like it. Tommy Mc. This way you can use the bullets you have and 223 brass is easy to find.

The truth is, I love the rifle. I don’t reload as much as I used to. I live in eastern NC. I’ve only seen one ground hog on the farm and I shot him with an AR varmint rifle that was closer by than the bolt gun. Not many small varmints around, only an occasional coyote.
it’s just like new and shoots pretty good. I have a hundred yard range with a covered bench. As the saying goes “ only accurate rifles are interesting”. I spent many days shooting IPSC pistol, but hi-power xtc was my passion along with some long range rifle.

Most of my shooting now is sitting behind the bench trying to put them all in one hole at 100 yards. ( any caliber, but as of late .22 LR ). I’m 69 taking care of my dad full time. Recently had cataract surgery that was disappointing and wondering if I can even regain my ability to shoot.

when I was younger I would run across an old geezer that had interesting rifles, but didn’t shoot much. I guess that’s where I’m headed.

I really should sell it, but don’t want to go through the hassle of listing it or shipping it. The simplest is to chamber it in .223. I have thousands of them loaded. But, I like something different and interesting.
Given this I would look at a 222 or the 6x45. Both will shoot tiny holes at 100 yards.

With the above being said, I would guess you have another .223 to shoot them in.

If your looking for an accurate, easy to work with rig, to just do a barrel swap on your 17, the 222 is it.
I will admit to getting into the 222 fairly recently. I ran across a Howa mini, with the intension of just using the action. I shot it and was really impressed. A little more tinkering and it is shooting as good as some way higher priced rifles.
Not picky on powders or bullets. Responds well when working up and changing loads and bullets, when I say this I mean it shows positive or negative results right now.
I had an assortment of various old BR bullets, of coarse what it shoots the best are no longer made.
