what barrel length for 6x47 lapua ?

Hi folks, i am having a rifle built in 6x47 lapua and was wondering what barrel length i should have.
I have provisionally said 25" but was wondering if i should just go for 26". This will mostly be a walkabout foxing rifle with a moderator fitted but will also be used for long range targets and varminting.
Any opinion will be more than welcome.
thanks john

I have a 27 on mine and easily reach 2,850 fps with the 108 Berger BTs (36.0 gr H4350 --- lots of folks supposedly using up to 40 grains in theirs). 26" would be fine, but you might not want to go much shorter than that.

I remember reading an article by David Tubb where he basically said that he saw no advantage in a barrel longer than 25" for his x-course shooting. Clearly for long range 1000yd shooting, you would probably be better off with 28"+ but for a foxing/varmint rifle and moderator, you don't want to go too long. He shoots a 6XC, virtually identical to a 6x47Lapua, so I'd go 25" and a reflex style moderator. JMHO

For a walkabout rifle 25" is plenty, even 24" would work. I have a 6BRX that started off at 27", then cut it to 25", and finally settled on 24". Out of a 24" bbl I can get 2950 fps. with 105 gr. bullets, so you should have no problem reaching 3000 fps. with the 6x47 Lapua, which is more than enough for target shooting.

Mine started out as a 26.5" I can understand that length for larger cartridges burning a lot more powder, but the 6X47L is a medium length case. After studying all the ballistics etc, I had it cut back to 24" and re-crowned. It's also a lot easier to get in and out of the safe now!

I like long barrels for the long range work 28" that would be ideal for that.
For walk around varmint rifle ya need another rifle, and a different scope IMO ...ya want it lighter, shorter, handy, and easy to maneuver quickly into a variety of positions, plus a different twist for the lighter bullets for ideal accuracy, (but not always, just more likely)...So build two rifles, one for each purpose...no compromises, and you'll be much happier.
