What are you using for target backers?

I currently use Homasote for my target backers. A 4'x8' sheet cut into 2'x2' squares usually lasts me sometime, though I am down to my last piece and thought I would see if there is anything better that you all may have found.

Specifically, I am interested in a backer that helps the target paper to tear as little as possible.

I know that folks also like foam board insulation and corrugated plastic.

I am not worried about it surviving rain/sun, I take my backers off of the target stands when not in use.

I have been printing my targets on 11X8.5 photo paper. I order boxes from the Post Office and cut them into four targets from each box.

This is my 100 yard target

I buy a 5'x4' rubber cow mat. Cut to whatever size I need and post em. One cow mat has lasted me over 5 yrs. I cut them with a jig saw...works great. All weather. Staples great...

If you use rubber of some type you can see your bullet holes better. Cut a hole in whatever your backing material is and staple an inner tube over the hole then put your target over that.

That is one of the reasons I like homasote, it has given me the "easiest" to read bullet holes, so long as the target paper is suitable.

Was curious if there was a better mousetrap. I will have to give some of these a try.

If you cut out a square behind your impact point and put an inner tube over it you can shoot it thousands of times and not even see an impact plus see every bullet hole in your target without tearing etc

I was just thinking of cutting out the worst part of the current piece of homasote and doing just that. Then I started thinking about how to make 6 cutouts for a 100 yard score target. Then I got a beer. :)
