What am I seeing in this new Barrel?

About 100 rounds into rebarrel of 40xbr, 222. Have not been able to get it to settle in! 21.5” barrel. Haven’t done much development at all yet due to weather and health issues. But…..

Started out with old dependable 22 gr H322 and 52-3 grain bullets starting @ .005 off. Barrel is 12 twist. Have run a few Sierra, Bart’s and BIB, nothin under 1/2”.

Have a 35X Leupold Competition and Jewell BR trigger on it. Old original Rem. barrel would do 1/2”, but looked rough. Thought I’d try for a one holer, I compere with myself for fun only @ 100 yds mostly.

I know what I THINK I see. But ye of greater knowledge and experience help me out!

Now to try and upload my 1st picks here.. aahhh Grasshopper….

Bc’z —no just began with that 322 load @.005. It shoots in my others very well. Hope to do more in day or two. What the bore scope reveals just looks weird to me, like the bullets are only touching grooves in the middle 1/3 of each groove

Have not tried N133 yet, 20-222 loves it, other 222s pretty good. RL-7 and 40g bullets have always done great for me in 222, but really want to shoot 52-3gr if I can. H4198 has been good but not the very best in others. RG’s 52s are humming in 22-250 and other 222! All of course within the context of an old blind bat such as myself!

I have a couple of questions - no answers. How far does the carbon run up the barrel? Should that be cleaned out? Where the rifling starts the lands look quite square, is this normal?
that's all folks.

Old original Rem. barrel would do 1/2”, but looked rough.
I’m having trouble following your post.
Looks like the ‘old rough’ shot 1/2”
I think this new barrel also shoots 1/2”?
The old rough barrel shot as well as this new barrel. So much for bore scopes.
Was the old barrel 1-12 also? I shoot a 222 also but 1-14 with 52 gr bullets. Always under 1/2”. So maybe step the bullet weight up a bit?
Don’t discount any health issues you have. I shoot the best when I feel the best mentally as well as physically.

C groove. They have a little hump in the middle.

M-61 -a new barrel on a heavy 222 ought to beat 1/2”, even with me. I think bore scopes are educational, and now that they can be had cheap I’m in. Yes I don’t like buying Chinese. A great bullet-maker suggested I try 12 twist

UR- thanks, that makes sense

Every other bright streak is in a groove if you look close at crown pic, lands are wider.
Odd. In my 223 barrels, without cleaning, the grooves have more carbon on them than the lands.
And, after 100 rounds, the lands would have a bunch of carbon on them - at least near the breech.

My estimation is they touch about 40-50% with the base upsetting to form the gas seal. It's very apparent in most barrels with a line down the middle of the groove.

Jelenko- Yes. I clean by short Butch’s soak, brush w/Butches alternate Kroil, patches to finish clean based on how they look. Less than 100 rounds is the total through barrel. Cleaned after every 10-15 or so the first few times, never more than 20 rounds between cleanings, so far . Thank you for the reply!
