What a kick in the ass .22 Dasher

I recently had a .22 Dasher built with a no turn neck and
throated for 80 grain bullets. The rifle was built on a old
Wichita action with a 31" Broughton 5c barrel that has an oversized Harrel's brake on it.
It is loaded to 3330 fps. with a 80 grain A-MAX. Because I had a large stock of Norma 6Br. brass that has been what I have been shooting with. Although I did form some up with Lapua and Remington brass. It is interesting to note the two best low 2's that I have shot was with the Remington 6 Br. brass. ???

I built it to be used for metallic varmint shooting out thru 500 yards.
a couple of weeks ago the gunsmith/benchrest shooter that built it was shooting it at a 12" swinger 885 yards with a slight 6 to maybe 10 mph west to east crosswind. It took him 3 shots to get on target and then he tagged it 17 times in a row. When we were done shooting we drove out to the plate and he was able to cover the 17 shots with the palm of his hand.

Yesterday at the San Gabrial club benchrest match he shot it again,minus muzzle break). I have not seen the final results yet,but he was in the middle of the pack with about a .330 agg.
I certainly know that's not a winning score, but for it's first and only time at a benchrest match we thought id did good!

It is a joy to shoot and makes you feel like you can reach out and touch on the range. I have not enjoyed shooting this much for years!

From Dave Kiff, My new .22,6.5) x 47 Lapua reamer arrived today, When the 7 twist barrel gets here we'll have more fun. now I need 90 grain bullets.

The dasher is great case. Does everything a 22-250 ackley does but only better. Better brass, less powder and better barrel life. I just built two 22 dashers one with a 6.5 twist 3 groove pacnor throated to shoot the 100 grain wildcat RBBT, and a 8 twist polyognal barrel throated to shoot 75 and 80 grain pills. The 6.5 twist is working pretty well with the 100's. I can only get 2865 FPS with the dasher but it shoots well, and does everything it needs to. The 8 twist is just getting broke in and is working ok. What powder are you using and how do you like the new 80 grain a-max. If you want to shoot the 90's your 8 twist will do it well, you don't need a 7 twist unless you want to shoot the 100 grain wildcats. Good luck and good shooting

I'm using 35.2 grn. of H-4350. Other posts on this forum
have reported using a heavy er load but my gun gets a stiff bolt
at 35.7. I have also tried VV-160 and Norma N-204 with good
results. Varget and 203-B were good for forming the brass
but much too fast with the 80 grn bullets.

You asked about the 80 gn. V-max. If I could get a supply I
would use them exclusively. The boxes I had were a pre-
production samples. I thought they were fantastic, But my
understanding is that the bullet engineers wanted to make
some changes before releasing the bullets. The changes have
been made and the bullets are now in production. I'm sure they will release them as soon as they get a good supply.

I also have had excellent results with the Berger 80's

You know, I hate to say it, but i gotta side with whatshisface on this one. I was talking with Clay Spencer about this very topic a while back, and I was talking about a "more efficiant case". From what I got from the conversation was that as in anything, there aint no free lunch. His point was that yes, you can shoot just as fast with abc (smaller) cartrige as you can with xyz (larger) cartridge, but you are doing so at higher PSI. And yes, you can argue that there are no PSI signs, but that goes directly to case strength (by design or by better quality materials)....the PSI WILL BE HIGHER WITH THE SMALLER CASE, all else being equal.

Again, this was my "take" on the conversation.

"Efficiency" is a feel good catchphrase of concocted notions,fueled with Imagination and Pretend. If/when talking like operating pressures,a case of lesser capacity,simply cannot make the like velocity of a larger case.

If I can shoot the same velocity with less powder and without pressure related problems, then by my definition that case is more efficient. Some brass is tougher. Apples for apples, cases that take small primers can take more pressure than those with large pockets in the same caliber. Minimum taper sharp shoulder designs control headspace better and have less bolt thrust, allowing them to be run hotter without primers flatteningprimers as much or bolt lift becoming an issue. I think that we all know that the pressure is higher when we do this. The question is whether that pressure is a problem. Some PPC shooters routinely run very high pressures without problems. This is not a recommendation, but they do. They are also some of the most knowledgeable reloaders and their example should not be followed by by most shooters.

I was under the impression that the comparison was between a .22 Dasher and a standard .22-250. Yes, the .22-250 AI is a different situation. Good cases abound, but without reforming can you name me a small primer .22-250 case source?
