What 22LR Reamer & Barrel

Ignition in cf is huge. Probably the most important part of the rifle in my opinion. Yes, shapes, mass, spring, and fall has been played with for a long time now. Long before my time in the sport. It just was not discussed much. Now its importance is much better known today but you will still read comments like bullets and barrels is all that matters. Many still think the action doesnt have a role in accuracy. I dont have any opinions about ignitions in rf because I have not done any experimenting there. But since the actions are so short, the firing pins will be a lot lighter than in a standard length cf action. I can see how it would be difficult to get really good ignition with such small firing pins and short springs.
Alex,

You feel about centerfire just how I feel about rimfire. Ignition is very important to rifle performance.

You read on many rimfire forums that it is all about bullets, barrels, and Bourbon. Well not so much about the bourbon, but it is discussed a lot, so I threw it in.

I do believe we in rimfire have a steeper hill to climb than centerfire because of your contained primers with the built-in anvil.

Our priming compound swirled around the inside of the case rim leaves a lot to be desired for setting off our rounds in any kind of consistent manner. The pic shows the powder inside a rimfire case, and that little orange speck is primer material that broke loose from the rim when struck and caused the round to fail to fire.

Tony....How can you be sure it was the pin strike that dislodged the primer? Could it have been that way out of the box?

I think that is what happened. If you look at the pic that is looking down the case, you can see where the piece broke loose. On the face side directly opposite is where the strike occurred. But even if that isn't what happened it tells the story of how fragile our ignition is.

When I was testing ignition with crescent firing pins, I came across this and other things that convinced me consistent ignition was not a given and deserves attention.

A lot of us were seeing this with Eley a 2-3 years ago. I'm only guessing something went wrong in the cleaning process of the brass. I didn't notice any in last years lots I've shot.....yet.
