What .22 Ammo Would You Use for Prairie Dogs?

I recently tried some Aguilla Interceptor 40g Hollow Points. 1470 FPS. I haven't tried them for accuracy as I've only shot them in a Ruger American mainly for armadillos. Probably dismal on accuracy.

Federal Game shok has been the most accurate hunting ammo in several of my rifles, it’s also hard to find but worth looking for. CCI mini mag is good, CCI velocitors is awesome on game but hit and miss in the accuracy dept, when a rifle likes it it’s a good choice.

I grew using Winchester super X in a Ruger 10/22, it was vastly superior to most of the other ammo available at the time, late seventies and early eighties. The difference in terminal performance between it and most other offering was plain to see. I still have a good stash of it

CCI stingers are a hyper velocity round and are ton if fun but it’s rare a rifle shoots them well. Like the velocitors, it’s a fun round when the rifle shoots them. I’ve used them on chipmunks, when they are sitting munching a pine nut a round to the lower Paunch area can produce spectacular acrobatics.

We are spoiled with the choices of rimfire ammo we have now, good time to shoot and enjoy the 22 long rifles.

Nothing shoots dismal out of my Tikka T1X , just saying Tikka got their act together on that rifle.

CCI Mini-Mag HP
And, Winchester Super X, HP's,.. IF,.. you can find any that,.. stay BELOW,.. 1,280 FPS !
I made an 85 yard shot, on a Sage Rat with, the Win Ammo and,.. DRT !
The CCI Mini Mag's work fine also, but am getting slightly Tighter groups with, Win HP's ( some Lots ! )
SK Standard Plus ammo, shoots great, in My green Mountain Barrel, also !
I have only shot a couple of Sage Rats so far, so, the Jury is, still out on them.
Key is,.. accuracy Testing in, YOUR Barrel and then, STAYING with,.. THAT, load !
HP's have, a slight FLAT at, the Nose area ( around, the HP ) and they just Kill,.. BETTER than, reg Round Nose.

Yes, the Winchester Super X HP are great. A while back when I lived in Indiana I kept a Browning T-Bolt loaded with them in the garage. They were deadly on crows at 75 yards and easily dispatched the troublesome Fox squirrel with a head shot.

This would be on a Res. Their rules. Seema a few slob hunters wrecked it for everyone. Do not know, at this time, if .17's are allowed.
I would be using a Remington 541-T, standard barrel with an old Bushnell scope that was my silhouette rifle.
Thanks for the suggestions!
My Sportsman's Warehouse now has a good selection of ammo.
I know some of you were a bit concerned with leading with certain types of ammo. I have some Montana X-treme rimfire solvent and Bore Tech Rimfire blend. Have not used either. Any good?

I slay a few thousand ground squirrels every year with 22 LR CCI Mini-Mag HP's and they definitely hit harder than standard 22 LR rounds. They also give very good accuracy from every rifle I have used them in.
I have shot a few PD's using them but I really don't like using rimfires for PD's but if those are the rules then it doesn't give you much choice.

Test a few boxes, shoot what shoots best.

Go back and buy a bunch. As you switch between rounds, shoot about ten of the new ones before you start testing groups. I shoot the same rifle and it hates changing between different makes, especially going between lead and copper wash.

I like Super X and so does the rifle. Old T22 was the best and for close range stuff it shoots Remington Subsonic well (at least the ones that have all the same powder in them...not real good QC at Rem . )

Buy a few boxes and try them. Both of the cleaners you mention are fine. Just get a bore guide.

My two cents. The OP has posted a reservation hunt for P-dogs and doesn't know if .17HMR is legal, and also if he/she wants to buy a .17 for one hunt.

My answer, if legal, .17HMR all day long! If questioning the purchase of a .17HMR, trust me, you'll find plenty of other uses for a nice .17 than just the one hunt on that specific property.

But, if he did by a 17HMR, then we would be reading the post he would be making about split cases!

Don't know why you picked my post to snipe at, as the .17HMR was mentioned several times here by others, but so be it. IME, I have never had a split case with .17HMR after several different loads in 2 different rifles. I have read posts/threads from others that have, but have also read the same about .22LR and .22WMR. Both of which I have never had an issue with either. So Knotwild, if you have had experience with issues actually shooting the .17HMR, perhaps you could elaborate on your experience rather than taking cheap shots at someone else's post.

If the OP is only restricted to rimfire, not caliber specific, the Hummer is the best choice for his target. Some may feel the .17WSM would be best, but that is the only RF round I have EVER had problems with and no longer use that caliber. To 'practice what I preached' above, my reasons are many split cases, consistent misfires, and much less than acceptable accuracy, even considering it is a hunting round. Again, JME.

Why even bother with those anemic calibers step up to a 17 hornet and have some real fun!

May be a little different ? I shot 100's of Rock Chucks with .22 Rim Fire CMP Black Box Target Ammo.
Out of a Kimber GI .22 Target Rifle and a CZ 453 American some over 100 yards.
Most shots off my Knee. What a Hoot.

Butting a .17HMR together now.

Title of the post says what 22 ammo. If you think I was sniping, you are wrong, but maybe sensitive to an opinion other than yours. The 17 does not fit my shooting needs. Yes, I have seen many split cases come out of nice rifles. But I'm not upset that you like it. I bought a Tikka 17 for a good friend because it does fit his needs. It has a place, just not in my house. Plus I don't want to have more patches, jags, and brushes to keep up with.
