Western Tack driver

Just so everyone is fully aware. This is NOT the original Tack Driver match I created nor am I involved with it in any way. They have copied my rules exact as written, match name and the target format as well. Imitation is the best form of flattery, but transparency to everyone is also important. I just want everyone to know I have no involvement in this in any capacity. I wish them well as it brings shooters together and allows people to try something new that they normally wouldn’t do as well as shoot with people they most likely would never shoot with. Thanks Jim Cline

Jim,
The original Tack Driver is contested at 300m; is it not? It's good that there is a match in the west which follows a similar format and is open to shooters who might otherwise not shoot together. This is what attracted me to the SC (original) Tack Driver (I will be a TD rookie this year). In a very real sense, this is much like the formation of "F" class when it first became a thing. It was intended to attract shooters from some other, accuracy oriented, persuasions, and it did this. The TD formula brings these shooters together as well, so it's a great thing. With "F" class being named for the originator, George Farquharson, the TD format could be called "C" class. Maybe it should be.
This shoot, in La Grande, is actually decently located for me, only about 11 or 12 hours away, and would make a decent tune-up match. The timing is a bit wrong this year though. Maybe next year.
By the way, I had said I was going to run a 308 Winchester for the TD, and I'm sticking with that. I'll be testing 3 of them and will bring the best one (why would I bring the worst?). WH

Jim, I look at the TackDriver the way many used to look at the Super Shoot during the years that Kelbly had it.
In reality, it was just a Two Gun Event. It was not even registered by either Sanctioning Body, as they did not refer to the classes as LV and HV. It was simply 10.5 pound and 13.5 pound.
What made it exclusive was everybody accepted it as being exclusive. It was the biggest thing in Benchrest. In many shooter’s opinion, it out shined even both the NBRSA and IBS Nationals.

The TackDriver at OrangeBurg is approaching that status. It has the added attraction of being a unique Format, ie the combination Group and Score at 300 meters at a range that is, even on a good day, a challenge. The Format is certainly not exclusive to any particular Discipline, as it incorporates Rifle Precision, (group), Rifle Accuracy, (score), at a distance where down range ballistics come into play as much as the shooters ability to tune his Rifle and read the conditions.

I see nothing wrong with others copying the Format. If done correctly, It is a great challenge for the very reasons you give. But regardless, other matches will not have exclusive stature of the TackDriver.

As you have noted, many shooters are building specific equipment in their quest to not only get at the top of the leader board, but also to conquer Orangeburg.

Our Pa. Tack Driver Lite is coming up this month on the 28th.
Jeremiah Keefe who does shoot the original Cline format at
Orangeburg, got the blessing from Jim. We just shoot 3 of each
targets, 6 total for a one day event with a max of 50 shooters.
Eat good all day long, and some of the best B.S. around. I think
it's appropriate since a good half of shooters at Anderson Creek
travel to the Orangeburg address......And as Jackie stated, gear is
thought out and tweaked. I was out this morning with another
"what if" idea and......

The tack driver in Orangeburg, SC is the gold standard and I think Jackie is right. It will hit the same status as the Super Shoot.

The idea of the match, format, targets, name, and distance were all thoroughly thought out by Jim. It is a challenging range and the changing targets keep you on your toes.

That is why I felt it necessary to get Jim’s blessing before creating the PA 300-Yard Tack Driver Lite match. I wanted everyone in our area to be able to experience the Tack Driver feel without it being a complete duplicate of Jim’s match. I am grateful to be able to use his idea and match format.

As Jim stated imitation is the best form of flattery.

I think if you are going to use someone else’s ideas, thoughts, or concepts give them a call, ask them if you can, and pay homage to the inventor.

At the end of the day we all have the same goal, bring people together and have a great time.
