Western Auto Ammo

Yeah, me too Bill. I'd bum some two-cent returnable bottles from neighbors and then turn them in for the cash. A 50-round box of Revelation .22 RF Shorts cost $0.14(!). Hard to believe how much our currency has been devalued since then. :(

Chris Mitchell
O boy Chris: Now you do take me back. Yes, my Mom or Dad would give me a nickel or dime and I and a buddy would scrounge up some bottles, sell them and make up the difference, which, as I remember, about .15 a box, for some shorts, as you stated. Good times, but sadly gone, in many ways.

Knew if I dug deep enough I would find them! Full box. The Sears box only has a handful left. No prices on either box, but the Revelations have to be from late 60s or very early 70s at the latest.

I have a revelation auto 22 which resembles the marlin tube fed without the squirrel stampings on the wood. First non BB gun i remember shooting

$7.79 if that is a price should be a clue as to the age. If i were to guess from the looks of the packaging i would have expected a lower price maybe i am off base but packaging says 70s, pricing, i would think is later
That looks like a early '70's box that was marked up to '80's prices. I remember our home town Western Auto you could get 'big gun' ammo for $4.59 a box. Magnums (.300 WM & 7mm) ran $5.99. The prices never went down after that.

Oh, and .22LR was $3.99 for a brick of .22 LR.

Yeah, that sounds about right. As a kid I used to buy boxes (50) of .22 LR hollow-points for 35-cents a box. Little higher than solids. Our area was plagued with groundhogs to the point the County offered a bounty of 50-cents for each scalp brought in to the local courthouse. Our area ranged from hills and gullies to woods bordered fields and lots of creek banks. Not like today when every fence line, brush pile or stand of trees has been rooted out to give more cropland. Back then no one cared about a 10 year old kid and his .22 roaming those hills and farmers were happy to have them shooting groundhogs...as long as you didn't shoot one of their cows. I had dozens of hot-spots and it wasn't unusual for me to get two or three each outing and, on one memorable day, I got eight with my trusty Remington 510. Darned good return on ammunition investment.

Can’t help on the date but I had a box of 30-30 like that and shot it up about 10 years ago. Every neck cracked :( I was shooting them so I could reload the cases. Obviously didn’t work out.

I googled it to see if there was ever one around me. The last store closed in Feb. 2019!

I remember seeing the sign, but can't remember where.
yeah--I can barely remember them when I was a kid--ours closed maybe early 80's????
could get guns and ammo there.

There was a man and wife that tried to keep a Western Auto store open and thriving in my town, but finally closed down, when he died in the early to mid 90's. She just could not keep it going alone.

Still got our OTASCO, up and going strong! They sell guns and ammo but the main $$ stream is appliances here in the middle of nowhere...

Got some lever revolution that does the same thing.

Reading all the replies make me think we need people control instead of gun control. Just wondering how long it would take this entitled crowd of today to screw things up if we could flip back to the 60's.

Yes sir, Oklahoma Tire and Supply Co. On Saturdays when the folks went to town to shop for groceries and to do the laundry. I headed straight to the OTASCO store. This was in Ada, Okla.

I remember the store, but I had no idea what OTASCO meant.
