Hello,
I'm new to the forum here, and so far I must say this is a fantastic place with good people, and excellent advice and information! I love the vast amount of experience I'm seeing here!
I've been shooting since I was 6 years old, and reloading since I was about 22 years old.
Mostly I reloaded in bulk (relative term with a single-stage RCBS RCII press) using the cheapest components available. I was a poor starving college student only interested in training & putting as many rounds down range as I could. My focus was on quantity, not quality!
Never owned a precision rifle before, unless you can count my K-31 Swiss a 'Precision' rifle... I recently helped my father build a precision 308 out of a Savage 10 FCP-K compensated rifle. So far the accuracy is stunning once the accustock was adjusted a little better. I've come to realize, from shooting this 308 Savage that, although my handloads were quite accurate from most 'common' firearms, this new rifle has shown the notable deficiencies in my handloads!
I cast all my own handgun bullets, shotgun slugs, and a couple rifle caliber bullets from lead alloys.
I reload Handgun ammunition in 38spl, 357, 380 ACP, and 45 ACP - all with Hodgdon's Universal.
I reload 12 Gauge shotgun slugs with Hodgdon's Universal.
I reload 7.62x39mm and 7.5mm Swiss with cast bullets using H335.
I reload 223/556 with cheap 62 grain FMJ bullets & H335.
Until recently, I reloaded 7.5mm Swiss and 308 Winchester with H335, and 180gn SierraMK & 168gn SierraMK (respectively), and got 'decent' results.
I LOVE loading with VERSATILE powders that work well across a wide range of cartridges.
Learning that my volume-based powder measure (old Lyman 550 type) was likely the culprit in my accuracy problems, I've recently switched to loading 7.5mm Swiss and .308 Winchester with Hodgdon's Varget, and very meticulously hand-trickling my powder charges!
The resuls thus far are amazing, but I need to learn more about bullet seating depth, jump vs. jam, meticulous case preparation, and fine-tuning my powder charge.
Since I live in the twin cities, and have been rather 'high profile' in the local shooting community, I've come to be very close friends with a number of people that work for Federal Ammunition / Alliant Techsystems. Ballistics Technicians, Armorers, and I'm hoping to learn as much I can from the experiences of the membership here, and hopefully I can contribute to the forum as much as I can in the future (once I learn more about precision loading).
Thank you for such a wonderful forum with great information! It will take me a long time to digest this much knowledge!
