First off I'd like to thank the OP #40Fan for hooking my up with the same tools he's using. That was extremely nice. This thread is an eye opener for me too that the comparator is measuring to a point (the line around the bullet that the bullet touches and stops at the comparator) that isn't necessarily the point where the bullet touches the lands, hence, it's a reference measurement and not a measurement of your chamber, even though you can use findings to seat bullets.
I have a 150gr factory softpoint load from many years ago that measures a whole lot longer using the comparator and calipers then any other bullet I have yet the overall length is a good deal shorter then my VLDs, that was a head scratcher for me as I couldn't figure out why I had this bullet with an ogive measurement that was like .07 longer then my VLD and if I set my VLD to that distance the bullet would be big time jammed into the lands yet the longer ogive bullet would fall out my chamber. I wondered if I was measuring my chamber distance to lands at one length then here comes this federal round that is longer measuring ogive with comparator and does fine. At that point I realized I needed to measure for each bullet but still didn't know why. It's still slightly confusing.
And to think at one point I thought there was nothing to centerfire, just get a good barrel and bullet...
