Weighing and measuring rim thickness on 22lr

Does weighing and measuring rim thickness of the 22lr help with fliers and tightening up groups?
Only AOL length sorting has proven to me to be the only viable means to sort ammo that works.

Weight sorting only proves variation in weight. rim thickness is the same variations on rim thickness.
AOL will actually provide how much more or less the bullet will engage the rifling similar to seating depth CFBR shooters do when reloading.

Nothing like weighting the lube/wax..:D
Thick on some, thin on others..
Rim thickness on some, the match grade OAL helps more- like mention

Lee, how does a typical box(50) breakdown in number of groups of ammo? What is the length range variation that can make up a group of ammo?

I measured rim thickness just once for a test just to make sure whatever everyone was saying was true. It is true, it’s a waste of time.

I measured one whole brick and grouped them all with the same rim thickness, from the thinnest to the thickest. I had enough to shoot one whole match with all the same rim measurement. At the end of the last card, I moved over to a sighter bull and shot 3 of the thinnest rim and 3 of the thickest rim. All bullets went in the same hole in the paper. No more ammo sorting for me.

My current CX bought in April using .005 as the margin of separation I have been seeing a majority of three different groups. and this is only with a 0.005 separation. for example, measurements are 0.710,0.715 & .0720 65% are spread between 0.715 & 0.720
I will say this that Lapua's quality as far as AOL is concerned has been improving year after year if not month after month. 6 years ago, it wasn't unusual to see 4-5 different AOL groups with more than 0.025 separation!

Lee, how are you measuring the OAL? Just to the driving bands.
Also, what gauge are you using?

thanks

Measurements are just at the Ogive. I use a MKII gauge unfortunately it is no longer being made.

Lee, I had one of these. I tried separating by OAL (ogive really). When I was done I went to the range. I shot about 4 shots of the middle range and then shot both extremes, short and long into that same group. All went into the same group. Did it several times, same results. I sold the gizmo.

Best to you,
John H. you know who. :)

Years ago I had the opportunity to shoot in a school basement. Virtually no conditions. It was farther than 50 feet, maybe 70. My gunsmith and I tried various things to try to make any ammo shoot better. I had the Neil Jones rim thickness gauge and found it did not make things better. I started weighing the cartridges and it did make a difference. Cheep ammo or expensive ammo. I would shoot groups with a wide variance in weight and the groups did open up. Similar weights and they got smaller. This was with an Anchutz 1413.At the time I was using PMC Match which is no longer sold. Shot quite a few 100 prone on the A36 target using that ammo and weighing.
Your opinion may vary.

I will sort rim thickness when I have a given lot spitting some.
I have proven to myself that it does work. It's simply all about
ignition and keeping the consistency closer. I use a Hollands
comparator, Not shown is the separate die that acts like a full
chamber, then I screw on a wide , flat tip to fully cover the base
of the case. Even with some of the good stuff, I have found ones
as much as .015". it's either from the material itself or a deformity
at the base. The Hollands is pretty fast. I'll take a pic of my actual
set up if someone needs it......

Proving something to yourself does nothing towards proving it to the rest of the world, unless you have data it becomes an opinion.
Hey John,

Since I can't get to the test center this is the only way I can use ammo that I just buy when I can find it. last year I did decently shooting sorted ammo. I am not known to keep data records like some. I provide what has worked for me.
if others try what I am doing, and it helps good for them if it doesn't well at least they answered any question in their mind.
