Weaver Tactical Mil-Dot reticle subtenstions

Can anyone confirm the subtensions on the Weaver Tactical 4-20x50 (model 800380 or 800360) mil-dot reticle? I believe it is based on the Army mil-dot, but wanting to confirm.
Thanks

Thanks again for your post. Any idea on the subtensions on the Weaver scope?

There are two universal types of dots on MilDot scopes - the "Round dot", and the "USMC dot".

The USMC use football dots, and the army uses round dots.

Which ever the Weaver had (I'll bet it is round dots) then that is what you have.

Premier Reticles made football dots, and Leupold (and most everybody else) made round dots.

The subtensions are given in the diagram that you posted.

sizes (like .8 or 1.25) are the size of that section in mils, so if something is .2 mils, it is 3.67" times the range/100

So, you see a "thing" that is .2 mils. and the range is 650 yards, then it is 0.2 x 3.67 x 650 divided by 100, and that is the size of the thing - if you know the size of the thing, (a face), you can re-write the math to give you the range - but most guys cannot judge that closely.

Most guys are not up to the math using mildots, so they use the dots as "hold over thingies" ;) ;) ;)

yep mil dot and its math are based on 10x.....anything else...come up with your own new math...

Thanks everyone. Yes it is ffp. I know some scope manufacturers varied the size of the dots in their reticles. For example, Vortex used a .25 mil round dot in some of it's crossfire scopes. So I was hoping someone had experience with the Weaver reticle.

Mildots have become a rage in the last 15-ish years, but their use is often misunderstood.

Their purpose is to determine the range to an object of KNOWN measurements. Someone that is skilled in their use can maybe determine size to 1/10th of a mil, so whether a dot is 0.20, 0.22, or 0.25, is kinda moot, cuz that accuracy MUST be met at the other end of the formula with equal accuracy of the target.

In the military, the shooting team have a cheat book with the sizes of known objects in the country - door frame 30" wide - car wheel rims, 13". truck tyres, 43"... etc. If a door frame = 1.20 mils, you have the range within a known error ~+/- 5%, which is usuable out to 800/1,000 yards on man sized targets.

But the average shooter that buys a MilDot scope, wants to range a coyote, and you you cannot, because you do not know the EXACT size of the coyote... it could vary within 25%, so your range is off by 25%... and if it is far enough away to need ranging,, then being off by 25% means you are just guessing.

In fact, you would probably be better off guessing.

But the dots make really nifty hold off/over points, and they look cool!

I have a 3-15 Weaver Tactical 800363 with EMDR enhanced mil-dot ranging FFP scope. It's reticle is based on the Army style mil-dots.

Thanks everyone for the input. I asked Weaver and this is what I got in return. I wish they had just based it straight off the Army reticle for simplicity's sake, but it is what it is. I realize that mildot ranging is an inexact science to begin with, I would just rather not introduce additional complexity/inaccuracy (if you choose to round the values) into the equation.

Units Mils MOA
A 0.073 0.250
B 0.582 2.000
C 10.000 14.377
D 0.218 0.750
DOT PITCH 1.000 3.438

Yeah i never understood the dot subtension being anymore than .2 (except for the USMC footballs and .125 interpolation), since you're interpolating tenths anyway.

Makes me wanna' beg the question as to why they came out with a .22 mil-dot dot subtension anyways?

Not trying to hijack the thread or sound like a complete idiot, but now that I am confused very badly. Can I just use the dots for hold over. I don't shoot comp. just varmint and recreational target but I find it easier to be more accurate farther out with a dot than just the regular crosshairs. That being said I need 2 quality preferably under $350 a peice mil dot scopes for my varmint rifles. 1 is a 22-250 & the other is a 223 with my shots being well under 600yds I mainly just need a good holding dot. Any suggestions.
