Weatherby Mark V question

I’m helping a friend out to clean and prep his father’s Weatherby Mark V 300 magnum for hunting season. I’m sure the rifle has been fired very few times, but I have no idea of its condition until I see it on Sunday.
Is there anything special I should be looking for on this rifle to make sure it is good to go? I’ve never worked on a Mark V and just wanted to ask if there are any special things I should be looking for or points to check.

hunting season.
Very cold weather slows firing pin velocity, if old oil is in bolts firing pin channel. May misfire at the wrong time.

Stock up on 300 WBY MAG ammo. Not always easy to find.

Customer called me on the evening before opening day. Sent his wife out weeks before to buy him some ammo.

Looks at ammo the night before opening day. She bought 300 Win Mag ammo.

As I understand it, you CAN shoot 300 Win Mag through a 300 Weatherby Magnum (and 300 H&H in the Weatherby).

Despite having both, Win and Wby, I have never had a reason to try this and I am not speaking from experience, but it was reported safe by some and the groups were just fine.

Edit: Others say from the case length difference it’s not safe. I’m not trying it.

I have a Mark V in their Super Varmint Master.

I personally would not advise lubing the nine locking lugs on a hunting rifle, especially if going into sub-freezing temperatures. It really isn't necessary. Just wipe the bolt with cloth lightly treated with mineral oil (Hoppe's Gun Oil) leaving a very light coating on the bolt and lugs.

Clean the bolt face with a nylon brush including under the extractor to make sure there is no brass or carbon particles.

It might be worthwhile to strip the bolt down and make sure it is free of carbon, lube, and any other foreign debris.

You are correct, as both headspace on the belt instead of the shoulder.
It was a known work around back in the 70's & 80's when I worked in a gun/sporting goods store. Not the big box jocks & socks dispensaries that pass as sporting goods stores today.

300 Win in a 300 Wby, will it work? Yes, but accuracy is absolutely terrible. 300 H&H works much better. There are several stock designs. Lazermarks will bring more money specially if it's a 5 panel.

That’s for the first or second firing. After that they headspace on the radius shoulder.
The belt origination was on the 300 H&H which really needed it as there is barely a shoulder.
No longer hunt but when I did Weatherby was always my first choice. The first shot through a clean cold barrel was always on the mark. Nine locking lugs, radius shoulder, insane freebore, I’ve no clue why that skinny barrel did so well. And my 257 was my favorite. Is there a flatter shooting cartridge today?

The neck/shoulder junction is not very far apart between the Wby and the Win. To my eye, that doesn’t look terribly different from some improved cases, but the shorter neck issue is never going away - and likely getting worse as it gets pulled down to fill the new shoulder.

If I was outside Durban, yes, I would go ahead and test this before I would write off the trip, but not here, as the fired brass would be useless to me in both guns.

The right cartridge is the .257 Wby, that some say the Win Mag could form.

Torque and loctite scope rings to 18 inch/#
Torque and loctite scope base to 25 inch/#
Put scope level on scope to avoid cant.
I pencil scribe scope rings and scope tube for centerline
Measure scope bell to recoil pad. Minimum 12 inches.
Clean barrel with Patch Out. When patches come out clean and dry. Good to go.
Check swivel studs tightness.
check rifle zero at 100yds or 200 yds

I was in Wyo. derr hunting one time. A guy had a 300 weatherby shooting 300 win. shells in it. Out of ammo and couldnt find the weatherbys . Wasnt with us just at the same ranch. Must of brought a handful of ammo. I bet it changed the shoulder angle on those winchesters. Doug

It's a Weatherby, clear it, clean it, send it at the range. Go Hunting
PREFERABLY,. get somebody ELSE, to Sight it In,. Off, the Bench ! ( OMG ! )
Horrible, sharp Jab,. Recoil and WORSE than, my Custom Mk V .338 Win Mag's recoil, IMO,.. Yikes !
As a Young Gunsmith, in the 1980's,.. I "Helped" a Few guys, get these, Monsters, Sighted in !
After, the .338 Win Mag.,..I went "back" to, a .270 WSM as, T'was, Plenty of Cart for, Elk W/ 140's @ 3,200 FPS
Use Correct Ammo, Zero it for, 200 Yards and LEAVE it,.. Fouled for, the Hunt !

Another Wby. story. Deer hunting with mine. Little buck jumped up on a drive. Shot him running in the butt. Went clear through came out his neck. Damest mess you ever saw when I field dressed it. Only time I ever noticed recoil shooting at game. I about started bawlin. Maybe arfrican plains rifle. Too big for deer. Doug

Good advice here. I would also tighten action screws as mine use to loosen up.

I’ve never had the desire for a 300WM, never understood why anyone needs the Weatherby version. I do have a Mark V Ultralight Weight, but it’s a 30-06. Great mountain hunting rifle, and plenty of cartridge for anything that I hunt. I agree with a good cleaning, and light oiling. Then foul the barrel before hitting the woods.
