Weatherby chamber question????

I will soon to be putting together a 270 Weatherby magnum. I need a chamber reamer and was thinking about having one made with less free bore. Interested to hear everyone's thoughts on standard Weatherby free bore vs. less free bore. I have several Weatherby rifles now and two of them shoot just fine, one does not. Always read in reloading manuals to seat bullets out further for better accuracy with Weatherby's. Also hear/read about guys doing away with extra free bore.
I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that the factory did this to cut down pressure and maybe recoil??? I don't believe a 270 has unmanageable recoil for me. I don't intend to load outside safe parameters and I doubt free bore does anything to stave off throat burning. Biggest question: free bore on a custom Weatherby build...should it stay or should it go???? Thanks in advance for any information, it is greatly appreciated!!!!

I believe if you read up on why Roy Weatherby chambered as it he, along with the long freebore, it was so his cartridges could be loaded too higher pressure, therefore giving maximum FPS to his creation.
If you lessen the freebore, as you plan, then you will reduce the fps he obtained and I believe you will find you are not within the same range as a more standard 270 win would be.
So you might as well just go with the 270 win and be happy with more common brass, dies and cost.
Just my thought. Do some deep research prior to what you are thinking. It might work, it might not.

I think Weatherby went with the long freebore so they could get and advertise higher velocities. You know the PR machine. I’d get a short enough free bore to seat bullets I want to use into the lands. You know it will start to move pretty quick anyway with these HV rounds. Unless you want to sell the reamer as a “factory” specs. I don’t think I would notice a recoil difference on a rifle with the different reamers even though a little may be there.

Yes.
And to msinc I do not think this has any effect on recoil.
I assume this is a hunting rifle.
If so once past the sighting in the recoil should not be a huge concern as hopefully it's one shot. However if you are concerned as you state with recoil, then your accuracy will positively suffer. Maybe the 270 Winchester is the way to go however not as flat shooting as the Weatherby. I hunted Antelope in Montana with my 257 Weatherby. It is so flat shooting it made me look like a star. Also took its toll on my ears. That's a nasty crack.
To be accurate you have to be comfortable and anticipating that punch is the shoulder is going to show on the paper.

Yes, I’m pretty sure the freebore was designed to allow more powder/ higher velocity and keep the pressures reasonable.
Recoil is about like a 7mm magnum with similar bullet weights.
My mentor was very fond of the 270 Weatherby, it was his primary big game gun, I think he had 3 or 4 of them.
Most of his wore custom barrels and would shoot groups like a finely tuned 22-250.
Build it and enjoy. I think I may have some brass if you need any.

Yes sir, I can use some brass...how much???

My policy on WBY mag chambers is do not alter the freebore whatsoever. In the next life the new owner will go buy a box of factory loads for it and it wont be good. Between the rounded shoulder and belt at the bottom i dont warm up the wby reamers anymore
