Weatherby Vanguard MeatEater Edition ODDITY

Close to 50 years ago, when I began my journey into the world of handloading, the 06 was the best selling die set according to my old Speer manual. Cut my handloading teeth with it. Reconnected again with it this past week, when a friend needed ammo. While it is in its decline, it be around the Wisconsin deer woods for a few more generations (hopefully). When my son told me that Andrew needed ammunition, the 06 was the first cartridge to come to mind.

When I read an article like that one I always refer back to an article Jack O’Connor in the mid 1970’s titled, “The .30-06: Workhorse of Hunting Calibers.” Lots of real world facts and data that are even more valid today given modern powders and bullets.

Of course if your hunting goals revolve around shooting at live animals at the longest range possible with frangible bullets, his observations are of no use.

In 1962 my dad won a Model 70 in a raffle drawing in our town of Lewiston, ID, then also Jack O'Connor's adopted home. The next day he went down to E. Main St. to pick it up at storied Lolo Sporting Goods. They handed him a new M70 in 270 Winchester. Dad hefted it, took a deep breath, and asked "Would you have one in 30-06?" "Sure do, but it's last year's model, a Featherweight." "Fine, I'll take that one." I've got it here with me as I write this.
