It's true that not all wind generation in the TX region ground to a halt. However, consider how many deaths we might expect in TX had not on-demand baseload natural gas, coal, and nuclear not been available. Does it appear to you that natural gas and coal went offline?

Now consider that even if you had enough wind and solar to provide 100% of electricity when the wind blows and/or the sun shines, without incomprehensibly massive battery storage, you still must have reliable gas, coal, or nuclear online at all times. And so you essentially need 200% generation capacity to do what 100% conventional generation can do on its own.

Did a little research today to see why the windmills, gas and even the nuclear power plant had problems. The wind mills simply were not build with a cold weather options package. Like heaters for the blades and for everything that has oil in it. Imagine trying to start your truck in ND with 20 weight oil in it. Also found reference to uninsulated natural gas line/ valves etc. The natural gas guys could not deliver near full capacity to the system. I worked in industrial maintenance for 35 years and all I can think of is that their main line valves were froze up. The nuclear plants use a lot of cooling water, lines, pumps valves etc. The data I read said they had frozen pipes. Looks like it was just mother's nature fault for freezing up to far south.

I feel like I'm kicking Texas10 while he's down, but here are more facts exploding the myth being pushed by certain news sources that wind held up heroically in Texas this week. (Data: Energy Information Agency)

From Feb 3 through Feb 9, wind and solar together average 37% of all electric generation in the state. 34% of all generation was from wind power alone. After the cold snap, wind and solar generation fell to about 10%. Since the extreme cold required about 30% more electric power than normal, conventional sources had to do much more than make up for the loss of wind and solar generation.

There were problems with nuclear and natural gas as well but relatively minor ones compared to wind, as shown in the graph I posted yesterday. Notice that wind (green) dropped to nearly nothing on the 16th, but gas (beige) was producing more than it had been before the cold snap.

We're back into the 40's today, sixties by next week! Haven't had much real winter here for at least 5yrs. Twas a good and necessary reminder for me, gonna make some needed improvements around the ranch. Gotta dig out some runoff ponds, better insulate some water wells and make sure hay is accessible! But damn glad it's over!!!

people are cry babies. The weather is amazing. Wish itd get cold like this more and starting in november... I wish its snow every year a dozen times. Nothing wrong with it.

Problem lies with politicians and electrical service. This aint the first time its ever gotten cold... never had issues before... now all of a sudden its cold and no power?? Its bs. Someone lined their pockets somehow, and other got their hands in someone else's pants. I dont trust anyone these days.

Don't even get me started on paying for internet service for example and it going out for days... yet you get billed the same if you had service or not.


Put me in a snowed in lodge, wood stove, and guns and ammo to hunt everyday with no one around..

When a daily record is shattered it's not unlikely you've experienced colder before, sure. A single day or two of deep freeze won't have much effect, it's the sustained deep freeze that does. So, when have you had it this cold this long before? And how reliant was the grid on wind and solar at that time?

Oh, and if you truly desire a "snowed in lodge, wood stove, and guns and ammo to hunt everyday with no one around", why aren't you in Alaska? You could create your own reality TV show. ;-)
