Weather? I apologize to all Texans!

When a frost free fails it leaks in the house, ruined the carpet in the bottom floor of dads house last summer. We had a nice little shower here this morning. I let the dog out to herd squirrels and it was over 70, can't understand what all the whining is all about. Global Warming and all you all must be imagining all of this stuff.
Frost-free faucets are supposed to be installed with the assembly on a downward slope toward the outside. This is why they supply a canted plastic flange. This allows the water inside the 3/4 copper tube housing to drain and not freeze and burst. Also hoses must be disconnected in freezing weather for same reason.

Good Morning! Every once in a while I tell the wife her cooking sucks. ;)
Every other day I’m going to tell you how bad you suck!!!! When are you going to shovel me a path to a tractor so I don’t get my flip flops covered in snow so I can clear some of these 4 feet snow drifts away from the shop? Did I mention you suck LOL ;)

It’s your own dang fault for moving into the North! We only have an inch down here! If you want to have some fun, watch the traffic cam footage in Dallas or San Antonio. A lot of people don’t have a clue how to drive in ice and snow. They’re playing bumper cars out there!

I think the difference is it never happens here, and we don't have any of the infrastructure to deal with it. In our homes, on the roads, or within the power grids etc.

If yall didn't have plows, snow shovels, or salt trucks...that 12" of snow might be a bit more of a hindrance.

Edit: It'll be interesting to see what this does to the states COVID numbers.

Also, if it was 12" of heavy wet snow that packed into ice they would be more hindered......

I drove into town this morning and every DA that owns a Jeep thought they were Conquistadors conquering the Wild West, half of them were In the ditch stuck. I honked as I drove by in the 5500 LOL’ing the entire time. One guy drove past me doing at least 55 and he made it past me about a hundred yards and took an abrupt left turn into the guardrail, I again honked while LOL’ing and drove on by. It’s crazy watching people that have no clue how to drive on this stuff acting a fool. I lived up north and dealt with this crap way to much to know better but this place is a ghost town right now other than the Conquistadors in their mall crawlers in the ditches hehe.. The guys from up north would get a kick out of watching these fools.. Im about to hop in a tractor and go make some money from these fools :). I’m going to pull the average Joe out for free but the idiots in the Jeeps are going to pay a recovery fee ;)

You transplants that are new to Texas, are about to experience “Texas Winter”. This is 6 or 7 days of cold, maybe some ice and snow. The weatherman will threaten snow. It may snow, it may not and if the weatherman says 2 inches it could be 10 or it could be 1/2”. It doesn’t matter how much snow it is, we’ll all freak out because we don’t see snow often.

The threat of snow (or ice) from the weatherman is your prompt to head to the grocery store and buy milk, eggs and bread. It doesn’t matter if you need these items. It’s just what we do. Everyone in town will be there.

You’ll also need to make a mad dash for faucet covers and finding them and getting out of the store will be like an episode of the hunger games. You’re in the redneck district.

Don’t look for a sled. You won’t find one. In the rare chance we get enough ice or snow to sled grab some cardboard or a trash can lid and go find the nearest hill. Yes, we know it’s not a hill. You live in the flatland, just go with it. You’ll be alarmed by the fact that you’re “sledding” towards a bar ditch, fence or maybe into a farm to market road. Just go with it. You’ll be fine.

We don’t have equipment to handle the winter and weather. The roads will be a mess and even though the state has been telling you for a week they’re ready, they’re not and it won’t work. Just stay home if you can and if you can’t just come to terms with the fact that nobody here knows how to drive in snow and ice.

Whatever you do, DO NOT talk about snow tires.

If you happen to slide off the road or get stuck, turn your flashers on, take a deep breath and wait. Two guys in a four wheel drive truck will be along in no time to offer assistance. Don’t try to help them, they live for this stuff, and will do what they can to get you back on the road. If either one of them screams “hey y’all watch this” just get back and get your phone out and start recording, you’ll probably have a viral video. Also of note, when they offer you beer and deer sticks, don’t be rude, take them and smile.

No matter what you do, don’t talk about how they did it back home in any of these scenarios. Nobody cares. You live in Texas now, Texans know they live in the greatest state in the country and it’s our way or the highway.

When we act like we’re going to die and start to complain about the 7 days of winter just shut up, we’re serious and we don’t care how much you love it. We don’t.

You’ll be back in shorts and flip flops in a week to ten days and it’ll be nice until right around Easter.

Texas “second winter” will be 2 or 3 days and will hit right around Easter, usually the week before or the week after. This will hit right around the time you plant flowers and a garden. We know you’re not from around here when we see you’ve planted flowers before Easter and before the “second winter” has hit.

This is why all the people at the nursery don’t sound like us when you’re shopping for plants. We know better.

During second winter it’ll go from 70 to 25 and you’ll experience all four seasons in one day. This too shall pass, get used to it and when second winter is over you can enjoy the 3-4 weeks of “spring” before summer gets here and it’ll be melt your face off hot until sometime around Halloween.

God bless Texas!

When I was still working and we had one of these storms I got in my 4WD truck and drove the 15 miles to the plant only to find an empty parking lot. A few minutes later a small Chevy car piloted by a part timer from Michigan that worked in the warehouse pulled in. He had no trouble driving in. We sat in my truck for a while, fired up and went across the highway to a convenience store for coffee, sat in the parking lot a while longer, and finally decided the plant was definitely closed for the day and we both went back home. Our HR department had failed to call either of us to let us know the plant would be closed for 3 days. At least I got to see some of the crazies go speeding down the highway and slowly drift off into the median and end up parked there. Worth a good laugh as I drove on by at a reasonable speed. We Texans don't do ice and snow well!:D

Snow....couple of inches everything is white. Pretty I’ll say that. Ice everywhere including my driveway. Trees are covered in it. Temperature outside? I don’t know or care.....Cold! Rolling electric blackouts. At least they are not picking on me personally. Dog is totally confused, he’s gotta take a crap and can’t find any grass outside. Mama‘s making home made chicken soup. I’m talking with you guys. Life is good and I’m retired.

Grew up in the "Snow-belt" region , east of Cleveland , with "Lake-effect" snowstorms . That's why I live in Phoenix now . But I did get a lot of chuckles reading this topic this morning . I've seen a "dusting" of the white stuff here four times in forty years , so we do get it here , if you can call it that . Stay by the fire , or heater in the loading room , and have a bearable day . :)

Josh, rest easy. It is not your fault. We have these things cycle through ever so often. The lowest recorded temp in Texas was recorded in Seminole, near Odessa, 2/8/1933 , it was minus 23 degrees F.

here is a link that will give you a rough idea of how often these things cycle through and reaches the coast.

I grew up in Odessa. Its a great place to be from (escape from).

We had a double whammy last night. We did pretty good getting a plan together for my son then the power grid took a hit. that is a bad thing since he is on well water. It seems that the wind turbines and solar panels aren't keeping up enough to supply the entire state. The power company hit SE Harris county with a rolling black out. Had to go over before daylight and block in the water and drain the pipes the old fashioned way. I hope we mitigated any damages we might have after the power comes back on.
As I was driving over, I noticed a bunch of flares burning around the area at the refineries and chemical plants. It looked like Enterprise in Mt Belview, LPG plant, was down, The Exxon Refinery in Baytown looked to be struggling and Lyondell in Channelview was in the same shape. I am sure there are more.
fear not, we don't need fossil fuel, we can retrain guys to blow hard on the windmill and produce power...

Alright Josh you get the rest of it.
I’ll try to get there as soon as I can. The little county road I live on has been closed for three days. They don’t have salt trucks or plows down here. The “municipal strategy” seems to be to wait until it melts. I was going to get new tires on my Sequoia last weekend but I put it off. They only have 1/4 inch of tread left. No better than slicks in this stuff!
I’ve been advised not to ask for “snow tires” so I’m going to get some “off road” tires!

I just put some reloads together for it’s first test run!?! I sold my other one with the cheap plastic stock because this one had real walnut!

Is your Sequoia 4WD (or AWD)? If so, with good rubber, you should be okay. Just don't drive fast. My neighbor came over to say howdy today (figure 4" snow here north of Spring Branch, TX). He was driving his Polaris Ranger. Started out in 2WD and got nowhere. Keep in mind that many of these ATV/UTV vehicles have recommended tire pressure of 5 (yes five) PSI.

Lots of Texans drive 2WD pickups. They should stay off the roads in conditions like this, unless they've lived in snow/ice climates before, and have a few hundred pounds of ballast in their truck beds to help get traction on the rear wheels.

We moved here from NH, and we're staying home, because it's amateur hour out there. In a week, it will be 70 degrees and all will be forgotten. I feel bad for the deer. They need water, and they're not used to this hard freeze. Hopefully some of them are using our stock tanks, but they freeze overnight and stay that way until I bust the ice come dawn. We have a cow that is Houdini when it comes to getting stuff out of the tank, like hoses, heater, and stay-full valves.
