Weather? I apologize to all Texans!

I remember a few years back (haha), while stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, we had about an inch, maybe 2 overnight and the whole post closed down. Gates and all. We were out in the “Back 40” doing maneuvers and they shut us down. “Top” brought us out a bunch of C-rations and there we sat for 2 days. Wow, just a little snow.....

Let a faucet slowly run, continuously
Thanks for that! I’d forgotten that trick!
I was talking to a plumber last week. He was asking me why I was insulating my addition with R19 and R30. He said : “You don’t need to use Eastern methods down here! This is Texas! My water line is only buried 3” and it’s never froze!” I’m going to call him tomorrow and see how he’s doing!
Last month, I was in Home Depot looking for frost free hose bibs. One of the guys told me not to worry about it. I pressed and he found a couple for me, buried in the racks.
There are 7 hose bibs on this house and none of them are frost frees. They sell you these little foam cups to cover them!

When a frost free fails it leaks in the house, ruined the carpet in the bottom floor of dads house last summer. We had a nice little shower here this morning. I let the dog out to herd squirrels and it was over 70, can't understand what all the whining is all about. Global Warming and all you all must be imagining all of this stuff.

8 degrees in New Braunfels this morning and about 6" of snow on the ground. High supposed to be in the 20's so it's not going anywhere, just like me!

Thanks @joshb we have about 5" now with more forecast. Had to get the neighbors out for their cow birthing during the night, lost the calf.
Outside dogs got to come in. This reminds me of the years I lived in Wyoming. Chopping ice for the cows to get water.

Josh, you made a BIG mistake when you took claim of all this, and now the wrath of forum is coming
down upon you.

Good Morning! Every once in a while I tell the wife her cooking sucks. ;)
That's a good way to get your fanny kicked out in the snow. We woke up to a new world this morning, 5" and 10° in south Ark. Got to go to putting out hay so my little ones will have a place to get off the ground, supposed to go to zero tonight and tomorrow.. this is what my skeet field looks like today...IMG_20210215_080657216_HDR.jpg

We had a double whammy last night. We did pretty good getting a plan together for my son then the power grid took a hit. that is a bad thing since he is on well water. It seems that the wind turbines and solar panels aren't keeping up enough to supply the entire state. The power company hit SE Harris county with a rolling black out. Had to go over before daylight and block in the water and drain the pipes the old fashioned way. I hope we mitigated any damages we might have after the power comes back on.
As I was driving over, I noticed a bunch of flares burning around the area at the refineries and chemical plants. It looked like Enterprise in Mt Belview, LPG plant, was down, The Exxon Refinery in Baytown looked to be struggling and Lyondell in Channelview was in the same shape. I am sure there are more.

Yeah, I got 4 heavy springers, one popped this afternoon while I was feeding. She had him over against the timber out of the wind, she had him dried off and sucking but nights like tonight are hard especially with heifers you never know for sure what they'll do, hope she stays with him...
Know what you mean. We a couple of heifers we are watching now and hopping they hold off till this freeze if over. it is 21 right know here in deep East Texas.

I might have to put on a jacket to do chores today.
that's about like my sisters line... cold out today, might have to put on a coat. if it gets down to 0 F i'll think about zipping it up. she is approaching 80. pretty spry, i'd say...

coldest i've ever been in was -26F in hurley one new years day. dang, that was brutal enough. everyone was pushing their cars into the afternoon sunlight and opening the hoods to get some warmth on the block.

What we got is unusual for me and you but I spect those boys from Toya up through Amarillo and the Ok panhandle are getting hammered...

all my backup equipment ended up at my off grid cabin, which i can not get to. my house is 100% electric :(. i think i will bake a cobbler while the oven still works.... then if power goes out it is camp in the garage with colemans and gas bottles....

Ours is totally electric also but I have wood stoves in my shop and the house. I'd have a wood stove if I lived on the equator. If the power goes out which it does a lot here you can stay warm and cook on them.... just fired this one upIMG_20210215_092506639.jpg

Meanwhile in the snowbelt of PA, 10 miles south of Lake Erie, we are scratching our heads wondering what all the fuss is about. We live this stuff from November until April. 12 inches of snow means we actually drive the speed limit.

I think the difference is it never happens here, and we don't have any of the infrastructure to deal with it. In our homes, on the roads, or within the power grids etc.

If yall didn't have plows, snow shovels, or salt trucks...that 12" of snow might be a bit more of a hindrance.

Edit: It'll be interesting to see what this does to the states COVID numbers.

Everything there seems to be opposite of what is here. In the early 90's I was shooting the Grand American in Vandalia Ohio in August. The temperature got up to the mid 90's with a humidity was also around 90%. The ambulance ran all day taking care of folks with heat related problems. Those folks were not use to that weather. The local schools decided to delay the start of school until the "heat wave" left.
Those of us that dealt with the heat and humidity every year just thought it was another day in paradise.

I thought then that it was odd to delay the start of school. Every year we started football practice in that very same heat for 2 weeks before school started. At the start of school it was still around 100 degrees and we opened the windows and ran big fans
Up there they shut down schools when it is hot. Down here we shut down schools at the hint of snow and ice.
