Some brass gets thicker towards the shoulder. Id guess thats why the tapered neck exists. It doesnt bother me either way. If I am specing a no turn reamer and it has a tapered neck I leave it. It keeps that part of the reamer cutting/supported as well. Thats a good thing especially in a 5r. I have even tapered freebores. Keep in mind, your straight necks all end up tapered as the reamer wears.

If the taper is reversed is it considered a trans case? What special accomadations do we have to make for trans cases and rifles?

In this instance one must only shoot tapered bullets.

There is a lot of truth to that. We are a lot more willing to do oddball stuff when things are slow.

The 6.5 Grendel would fall into this category. I think of it more as a compound leade angle, but tapered free bore would be just as correct

I've done a couple of tapered FB's. They shoot fine with reloads. For some reason with factory ammo it was hit or miss. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze. The phone rang.
