waterfowl hunt shotgun for wife

What are your opinions on a good shotgun (model/gauge) for women?

Wife won a new mossberg maverick O/U 12 gauge last week at DU banquet, but I think it's gonna be a little bit big for her.

I use a Beretta A400 in 20g with Kick-Off in the stock. I like it and my daughters grab it when Im not looking. Tristar makes a kind of copy that is pretty good. Anything semi auto will help with felt recoil but cheap reliable don't seem to run hand in hand.

I second this…hunting buddy’s wife uses the a400 light 20g with the kickoff and it’s excellent! Very handy little gun and very light recoil compared to my a400 12g. Can’t go wrong with beretta in my mind.

I bought my wife a 1187 with a 26" barrel 30+ years ago.
Cut the stock for a shorter length of pull.
The heavier weight of the 1187 along with the gas system keeps the recoil down, great for hunting in a blind to heavy for a field gun.

My wife shoots a Benelli M2 20ga with a youth stock on it with good success. She's only 5'3" and even with stout 3" waterfowl loads she manages fine. The thrill of shooting at game lessens the felt recoil as well lol

If possible let her shoot several options to determine her preference. I own auto, SxS, and ou. Until five years ago I never owned a 20ga and tried the low cost savage ou as a light weight carry for pheasant, loved it and evolved into a Beretta. The major surprise is 3in mags have less felt recoil than similar 12ga 2 3/4 loads in heavier guns. At a minimum find the best person possible to help determine the best fitting gun.

Franchi Affinity Elite 20 gauge. I bought one for turkeys and the whole family likes it.

Factory adjustable stock and lengthened forcing cone, stupid smooth operation. Very nice especially at $1000

Let her try it.
If it doesn't work, I'd suggest a Browning Light 12. The friction recoil system tames the recoil considerably and it's light enough for extended carry.
Gave one to my daughter, who weighed a buck-twelve at the time. She'd put 100 rounds through it just fine, no sore shoulder. Her husband's Mossberg rattle-trap 500 makes her stop after a few rounds, in contrast.
Now that she's a gym-rat-cross-fit junkie, will see how she likes my other shotguns this Sunday.

Or the Montefeltro in 20 ga. My daughters each have 1. They're lite weight and the fit matches their smaller size well. They come in left handed actions as well, which was a plus for my middle daughter.

The Affinity is made in the same plant that makes the Benelli. The Stoeger is made in Turkey and is the same design. I have 12 and 20 gauge Affinities and they are excellent for the price and made in Italy. Come in Camo, Black, or wood.

I'm a bit smaller, shorter, with shorter arms, so larger and heavier arms aren't my thing.

About the handiest "bird" gun I've ever handled is an Ithaca SKB 100 20ga. There are certainly smoother and more-expensive models in that format, but this particular one was specifically designed to be lightweight and well-balanced. Had 25" barrels. Wasn't a very refined gun, but a competent gunsmith could have smoothed out the minor hitches and made it really 'sing' as a bird gun. Very easy to use, light enough to carry all day. And with the right load it'd take most any bird.

Any gun in the "light bird gun" end of the spectrum would work quite well, I would think. CZ made their Ringneck side-by-side until 2013, which would do nicely. From current makers, a CZ Bobwhite in 20ga, with the 26" barrels, perhaps.

What is she going to be hunting mostly?
