New Shotgun Worth It?

Sorry to hear that bit of info, especially from a member whose opinion I respect. I will be doing some research on the interceptor latch stud. I'm a buy once, cry once buyer as well. Just couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Others have posted good luck with the shotgun. Since mine was a slug gun I was going to use for deer, I wasn't taking any chances with another failure of the stud. Bird or rabbit gun's a different story.

Before I start, it has been months since last activity on my favorite forum. Been way too busy with work and life to think about guns, but I definitely missed my fellow members. Gold membership on the way after next paycheck.

I've been keeping my eyes open for a shotgun for at least a year. Lots of my friends want to go bird hunting this year, but all the guns I had were rifles. As much as I hate Walmart, a buddy of mine texted me a pic of two shotguns on clearance, and I jumped at the opportunity without doing any research because the 12 gauge was 50% off and definitely would be gone tomorrow. It's a Remington 11-87 Sportsman (synthetic stock).

I have been reluctant to buy anything Remington because of quality standards decline over the last decade, but the deal was too good to pass up. $270 after sales tax. Here's the question. Has anyone used this shotgun, and is it a piece of junk or at least as good as the entry level Mossberg Maverick 88 they have for $188? The Remington looks and feels like higher quality than the Mossberg, but I haven't shot it yet. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,
That's a steal. You won't regret it. Don't give up on Remington. They've gone thru some chitty times but still make a decent product and for 270.00, I dare you to find better. The 11-87 is and has been one of Remingtons best sellers in the shotgun lineup. Haven't heard of many issues. In fact I've been looking for a Browning A5 20ga light. May have to look into that deal. Good luck.

The 11-87 is a fine shotgun and as posted already an improvement over the 1100. For some strange reason though the folks that lived and experienced the 1100 age just cant seem to admit the 11-87 is better and refuse to let go of the 1100....too bad for them. The ability to shoot either 2 3/4" or 3" and have instant choke selection in an otherwise exact size and shape identical gun sure seems way better to me.
Since 1987 I have replaced maybe 3 latch studs. The part I have seen cause the most trouble is called the "interrupter" and it cost about $10.00 and can be changed in a matter of minutes by anyone with any mechanical ability. We have a lot of duck hunters around here and they don't take good care of their guns...I also replace the action tube {brazed to the receiver} and one or two parts called a "link".
Ackleyman is right as usual, not all o-rings are created equal...suggest you buy two or three from Brownell's . They are not simply rubber o-rings, the good ones are about $12.00 or so each. Keep a good lube like grease or anti-seize on the threads of the choke tubes...the most requested repair I get is to remove frozen choke tubes. Sometimes the barrel cannot be saved so pay attention to this. Happy hunting sir!!!
