Warning: Electronic Version of Hornady Reloading Manual

Like most of you here, I own a shelf-full of reloading manuals, going back many years. I've always considered them indispensable both because of the load data they contain and because they encapsulate a tremendous amount of ballistic testing.

A few years ago a few of the bullet companies decided to release not just their traditional, bound, printed version of their reloading manual... but also identical electronic versions for use on a smartphone or tablet. Hornady was one of these.

I bought the Hornady 10th Edition in this electronic format and was delighted to have it permanently on my iPad, ready at a moment's notice. When Hornady released their 11th Edition in 2021, I bought that version as well.

You usually expect that when you buy a book - even an electronic version - it's yours, at the very least, as long as you have the device you downloaded it to. Alas, Hornady would beg to differ...

I had to laugh at that "Buy Edition - The Complete 11th Edition" option for twenty bucks. I already did that, two years ago. What's the old saw? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. No, that "Restore" button doesn't do anything.

The older 10th Edition version no longer works either.

I don't have a problem with Hornady, or anyone else, monetizing their work by going to a subscription model, or having their book "expire" after some amount of time... as long as they are upfront about it. But I don't like scams. And I don't like dishonesty.

I expect Joyce Hornady is turning in his grave. And I doubt I'll be buying any more Hornady reloading manuals.

What does Hornady say about this situation? I agree with what you've written in that you've paid for something you no longer have access to.

An option would be to screen shot the pages you load for. Even if it was 50 or 60 pages, put it in a saved folder.

Just a thought.

And all their BC's are dead on.

And their is NOTHING wrong with the 6.5 147 Eldm. It never vaporizes on the way to the target.....

I bought mine before the pandemic so 2019 and I just checked mine . Still works just fine and I’m on a new device . I’ve not needed to buy again or subscribe to anything.

I've been getting the Kindle version... pretty sure those are 'equivalent' to what you get with the printed hard copy. No 'ala carte' options.

Do you know what the /20 means in the option "Complete 11th Edition"? Does it mean for 20 cartridges?

I have the 9th and 11th edition on my phone…bought them through Apple Books and have transferred them to a few different devices. Never had an issue with them. I have plenty of others in print that I like more then the hornady manuals but it is kind of nice to be able to reference them when I’m not home and something pops in my mind.

I downloaded the Hornady App on my phone about a year ago. Instead of purchasing the entire load manual I only purchased a few of the calibers I load frequently, 308, 243, 300BO, etc. They were .99cents each. These were under the 10th Edition App. When the new 11th Edition Update for the app came available these three calibers were no longer available and I had to purchase them again on the updated 11th Ed App. I have these in several paper manuals as well but like having the load data handy on my person. Won't be doing it again.

One thing I don't understand, If one has the last years addition of a reloading manual, why would you buy it again this year? The only reason I can think of a new caliber has been added. Any other reason??

I have three year old Hornady and Berger book, am I missing something that I don't have the latest?

As you say, I, like many others have more than one hard copy reloading manual/book. I have the Hornady one among them.
But I still refer to the on-line Hornady Data loading at times. So far, it is still free to pull up and use.

The Hornady "book" that I purchased roughly 12 years ago is still sitting with all my other load manuals on the shelf near my bench. I downloaded the App for the convenience of having it with me at all times on my phone. But admittedly not pleased with the result.

The BEST on-line data resource is HODGDON's reloading resource. It's updated fairly often, offers extensive data and it's FREE!

I have the iPad Kindle version. I have had the Hornady 10th on there since it came out, and recently added the 11th without loosing the 10th.
Maybe the difference is the purchase path?

Like many of the others, I prefer the hard copies.... but when on trips I don't lug those around so the Kindle versions are handy. Can't tell you how many folks arrive on trips without their homework or DOPE, so I have learned to keep the books handy one way or the other.

Yeah if you bought the data regardless if whole manual or individual cartridges. They “should” be yours forever. Especially if they are charging $.99 each . No that’s not a lot of money but it is if you calculate what that amount generates for Hornady . There must be hundreds of cartridges in the manual . Imagine I-tunes doing that with individual songs . It would be something like buy album $20 , buy one song in album $19.99 . Oh and if the artist remasters the album the songs you bought get deleted and you must buy them again .
