Wanted~ Prairie Dog Hunters !

Hi, I want to go on a PD hunt this coming June 2025, and I need some help with the drive out to SD
I live in North West Indiana, so its a 12 -15 hrs of driving. At my age (78) I just can't do all that by myself. So if you can take a week off in June 2025,and you want to go on a Prairie Dog hunt to SD. lets talk.

I don't know for sure as yet, but I'm leaning to DIY ! I just want to go back out west to shoot PD's. I can say that the prices of "guided" is way out of my current budget! Up to $1000 per day is not what I would call having fun.....unless I was on the other end of it! From my research ,SD has the best and most places to find the furry little buggers.
They say it's a "Target Enrich Area"........ so let me know if you can take a week off early June 2025

Last two summers there were no PDs in South Dakota to speak of. Places where there were 200-300 shots per day are gone. Plague, poison, whatever. I think the only places left are guided hunts. Check and double check. Good luck!

100-200 shots per day is an average expectable number. Less than 50 shots not worth a 8-10 hour drive. Drive time and amount of shots is in the eyes of the beholder.

My friends pay I think 250 a day in WY but that includes food and lodging.

A few years ago when I and a friend visited Ft Pierre National grasslands with a $10 map every location that we looked at back off the road turned into park and walk ? Still no idea which direction to a dog town. Was about 60 yrs old and hiking was to physical . Got in the truck and headed home.

I deer hunt in SD every year (West River) and shoot prairie dogs in WY and MT. I wouldn't say my experiences support that comment. I have also hunted prairie dogs in SD 3 times using an outfitter and deer hunt on the same properties. There are good numbers of prairie dogs on them, but they are all private property leased by the outfitter. When I have checked other places for prairie dogs in SD I have come up dry.

The last 2 years we've went through about 150 rnds per day per person in SD. A lot of it depends on when you go, how far you can shoot, and how far your willing to walk. We generally hike and shoot off of tripods. Last year we were shooting out to 600 yds but that's largely because we had a new guy with us that wouldn't stop shooting that far. Normally, we don't shoot past 300, and we try to keep it within 200 but sometimes they are just too shy.
