Want to re-barrel to 7X57

Thanks alot i am gonna start by placing a order for the barrel now so it will be here by the time i get home and start grabbing brass to work on.

Hi gentlemen

Hi Eric, quite an interesting project you put yourself into,I understand through reading the posts that you have problem in the US finding 7X57 ammo though I believed it was a popular round there, made by all the major brands...Maybe not then, anyway,my point is,if you can come along Sellier Bellot cartridges for that caliber, they're pretty good hunting rounds, quite cheap, that you could shoot prior to reloading them for AI,thus starting to fireform them;I'm not familiar with fireforming myself but I believe that's how it's done;their brass is good stuff,I shoot them in 7x64,and reload them 4 or 5 times like a breeze, they're very consistent and stable, and cheap,30 to 40% less than their US conterpart,so check for yourself and give it a go,nothing to lose in the process.Just my 2 cents, good luck with the whole plan.

Clod-NC i dont think its a problem finding the ammo more of a issue of finding quality ammo. With their being a high quality selection of high BC 7mm bullets in the 160 to 190 gr range its hard not to wonder was a properly load 7mm mauser will do in a modern action with good strong brass to back it up.

My hope is i can use this rig to take deer at extended ranges and to shoot some tight groups at 1k

Hi Eric
I was not implying that Sellier Bellot was outstanding ammo, just that it's an easy way to get good brass for little money, that you can fireform by just doing some plinking and test shooting the new rig. then when it's fireformed of course you get into load development, choosing your best pill and powder for the job at hand...Another thing you could do is ask your smith to ream a piece of your barrel blank into a 7x57 AI body die(reaming the neck portion of it into 30 cal),order a Lee custom collet die and a Forster benchrest or better still a Forster ultra seater in 7x57 AI. It would be a pretty neat set of dies for the use you intend to have of that rifle.

Eric, hope you have good luck with the AI. I've thought about going the AI Route but just can't bring myself to do it.
That old Ruger 77 is like an old friend.

In 1968, My friend Chet Tennison showed up with a 7x57AI reamer. I got my tang safety Ruger, rechambered. Then I went to the Ackley No.1 for load data. The 4350 load for the 160 Nosler partition actually did get 2940f/s. So, I ended up with two rare things. An accurate Ruger and a gun that shot to it's advertised velocity. I used it as my caribou and sheep gun. What a great gun! I probably have killed 50 caribou with that combination. I tried lighter bullets and they were not as accurate as the 160. They did kill like lightning though. I tried the 175gr. Speer and a lung shot bull just stood there, bleeding out of both sides as if someone had turned on a water hose. I ended up putting a second shot in him. Back to the 160 Noslers and just enjoy this old gun. It has a mild recoil and has worked well for me these many years.
That is my personal experience with the 7x57AI

I read through the posts but didn't see anywhere if the action was a long or short. I could have missed it. I had a 7X57 in a long action 700 for a long time and it functioned very well. With a short action you will limit yourself to 2.810 OAL due to magazine length. My loads always needed more length than 2.810

KMART

my Remington is a Long Action i couldn't even think to stuff a 7X57 into a Short action

cdparker

that is a really rare thing to get that sort of luck with a ruger that shoots so well, and that it shoots at the advertised velocity.

Russ

I will be getting the ol 700 a new tube when i get back from my deployment i just need to get in touch with a smith to do that job
