Want to go pdog shooting.

A few of us friends went to the Rosebud res several years ago. They don't seam to have many dogs now. Would like to try some where different. That dosen't cost a arm and leg. Thanks in advance Mike.

when you get recomendations of a location, go to Google earth, and zoom in on the ranch, etc. yu will see if there any dog holes, and then you can inquire as to the owner, if they have been poisoned, deseased, etc. shot out.

just as an example go to just north and west of Syracuse, ks, and zoom down, you will not believe what you see. just north and slitely east of Medway.

Would also like to get some information to dog hunt. I have a group of 6 guys that have hunted the last 6 years and am looking for new places. Any info would be appreciated.

WOW that's a bunch of holes!!!! 8)

that location is a ranch that charges for shooting,

i did not put it up to sell going there but to show you how to check out a location that you hear about and before wasting your drive, see if the dog town does exist and just how big it is, then call the local game warden to confirm dogs alive and well.

There is one problem with using Google earth for pd prospecting. You can't tell whether there are still dogs just because there are mounds. There are many places where the dog towns are there, but the dogs have been poisoned out or died of plague. Telephones are still pretty good for this sort of thing.

In fact I have been to that very ranch, one year great shooting the next, virtually no dogs, drought and plague.
That is why i'm asking shooters first. We live in Alabama and don't want to drive past SD.

i have found the Google check, game warden call, property owner call confirming one, are there mounds there, then the warden as to poison or plegue, and finally owner as to how heavily they have been shot.

Just because google arials shows P-dog holes like a sieve you have to remeber THAT may not be an active town. It may be void of them except for rabbits & snakes.
I learned that very quick when I went to a spot I found out here...tons of "old" mounds, wiped out by plauge & on state lands poisoned by the state.

Hay fields that have been bailed will resemble pd mounds. Look to North central SoDak for pd's, standing rock Indian reservation is good.

I hunted South Dakota with Jimriver guide service. It cost a few bucks, but when driving 22 hours, you want to make sure that you are going to have a place to shoot. Willie has plenty of ranches to shoot dogs. Price included food and place to stay.

I checked that one out a little more than i want to pay.It might be to late this year to plan a trip. May start looking for next year.

As of this past July, I know know a rancher who has dogs on his place, but he does charge.
I would need to check what that rate is, but I can find out if someone wants to know.
I met him during the Wyoming Tactical Rifle Championship. He was our Range Officer for our last field course.

I have been going dog hunting in SD for the past 15 years. Last year there were towns (lots of) with mounds as far as you can see and not a live dog anywhere. The plague has really taken a toll out there. Went to one of my favorite shoot all day places and NADA _____G thing. The year before shot there two days straight all day, not any more. :'( go fish.....

Mike, here is a suggestion. Get the last 6 issues of Varmint Hunter Magazine.
Read articles, determine where the PD shooters are shooting, generally.
Spend a day calling the BLM offices that handle that area. They will have names
Of the ranchers that allow shooting. Call them, get a read of the situation.
Send one of the guys early to scout, min 2 days. have 3 other locales ready to hit if a dry hole. 1st stop local coffee shop in the town near where you want to shoot. Talk to the ranchers. Get the real scoop. I have developed a network of many ranchers that allow me back- I am an oddball because I shoot by myself.
Easy to move, don't need as many targets, and I kill a lot of PD's, and the
Ranchers are OK w that, cheaper than poison for them. I am also thoughtful
About their needs- gates, stock tank, cattle in bad situations, and I send coffee &
chocolate to them in the dead of winter to say thanks. Ok that's a speech, but
Boots on the ground early gives good intel. My first ever time shooting was
Rosebud and I never saw so many PD's ever again, good luck!

PM his info if you don't mind. Thanks Mike.
