Want to build a 6.5 284

I want to biuld a 6.5x284 and need some help on picking all the parts ..
I want it for a long range deer gun what it to be under 15 pounds with the scope also want a detachable mag .. Thanks for all the help ...

That's like asking "I want to buy a truck".......with no specifics laid out besides a half ton and black....

Billy,

Yup, Alf is right.. What would really help is, your "Budget?" Or you'll get suggestions like a Savage action, Boyds thumbhole Mosin Nagant stock, a used barrel with a "1.5-80x70mm Ultimate Sniper Scope"

Or,

Bat/Defience/Borden Action, Mcm/Manners stock, Brux/Kreiger/Bartlein barrel and a Nightforce/March/US Optics scope..

Huge difference in the price tag..... But both meet your criteria..

Yeah your right I should have thought that out a little better.. I was thinking a stiller predator action , don't know on the barrel . Also going to use a maners stock .. I also would like to use a detachable mag

And Nightforce for sure

Use a long action.
The short action is often used but bullets need to be seated deep. Mine has a short and I plan to change it down the road.

Hi Billy B,hi all

I just read your thread Billy, and presently am at a slightly more advanced stage than you...Difference is in the cartridge, mine will be 6.5x57 improved 30°(this shoulder angle ensures good mag feed, and provides a spacier and more accurate cartridge),reamer cut by Dave Manson,I can send you a copy if you wish;I've read and gathered that for a hunting rig it will have all the good features without the backlash of 6.5x284(barrel burnin, recoil, great powder charge)and here in New Caledonia all this is serious matter to be well thought out.I don't intend(as of now)to shoot heavier bullets than 120gr(Nosler BT,Sierra pro hunter,Hornady SST)the critters involved don't require heavier bullets(the further I can think of shooting being 350,400 yards);all these can be launched at around 3000 fps or more(3100) through of a 26" barrel. The cases will be fireformed from 257 Roberts, slightly necked up and neck turned, the chamber will be a little tighter than Saami specs,I'll start with H4350 or H4831sc,or rather their australian equivalent(ADI 2209 and 2213sc).The scope will probably be either Vortex Viper 4x16-50 or Meostar 3x10-50(very clear and crispy piece of optics)...All I have to do now is convince Mc Gowen to accept the project....No easy task, believe me. So,Billy, all the best with your quest, and please ask me if you want to check my reamer print. This cartridge I'm hoping to shoot promises to be a little more efficient than the 260 imp(little more capacity, longer case, solid and appraised parent case- 7x57),maybe you should give it a thought, but your issues in the US are a bit different than mine(you can change your barrel almost at will, whereas I have to strive hard to get one shipped to me,and nobody to couple it with my action....Good luck anyway.

Sounds like you have pretty much everything covered but the barrel. I would stick with the 6.5-284 with a 1-8.5" twist and 30" long if possible. My buddy's 30" barrel is 200fps faster than his 26" barrel.

30" Tube on a hunting rifle???? Common now. Unless you sit in a tree stand or dont move around alot I would think that to be rather combersom. I had a 338/378 Wthby Mag for a short time with a 32" Krieger tube. What a pain in the Arse that was.

#5 Contour around 26" is plenty for me on a hunting rifle. Thats just me though. I walk and spot alot though. Drive and spot as well wich means getting in and out of the truck too.

As for 30" barrels on hunting guns, living in Utah as you do, Hunting open country it should not be any trouble what so ever. I have a field gun in .260, that has a 30" barrel and weighs about 15lbs. For antelope and prairie hunting the barrel or the weight is no issue other then the ridiculous speeds it produces. I almost wish my gun was a 6.5-284 for even a little more fps........

I am with RussT on the 30" barrel and take the same stand Wyo260 does also. I hump a 29", 11.5lb rig out to my stand via an eberlestock pack. That stand I stit in all day and can see a loooong ways. But that sob is cumbersome

On the other hand for pounding thru the brush or river bottoms, give me my stubby little 20-22" rigs any day...

Depends on the application... I guess thats why I have 4 diff big game rigs, different strokes for different deer...

If he can carry a 15lb rifle i dont think a 30" barrel will bother him. What I am saying is if he wants a 24"-26" barrel may as well just go with a 260, 6.5 Creedmoor, or 6.5-47L.

True that is a good point. Heck he can always have it cut down later if so desired as well. I find it rather hard to put length back on after its been cut off... Ha!

Got alot of time behind a 6.5X284 over the last decade. None of them shorter than 30" on a Match rifle. I have a new Tube in the corner to put on come May and old one will come off and maybe get put on a Hunting rifle later???? Maybe Ill leave the length to see what its like. ( again )

Right now I have a 300 rem. ultra mag for my main big game rig and a 6x47 lapua for all the small game .. I just want something with a little less kick .. Something that my wife can shoot with ease when we are sitting on a ridge ..I want a heavy gun to help with some of the longer shots that I have to deal with ..

Ridge shooting....Very addicting. Set up the spotting scope, dig out the range finder, pull out a sandwich and start scanning the area.

So Ihave to ask Billy is a 30" tube going to hinder you? Im guessing no with what you are describing. Do you have aplan on bullets? Berger VLD, Hornady AMax, Accubond?

Bergers are the first choice ,but I really want to try the new accu bond LR ..
It is fun ... But it's just as much fun hitting rocks at 800 plus yards also..

+1 on the 6.5x47 lapua for the ranges you mentioned. Mine is a bat vr90 right bolt left port with a lilja 1-8 3 groove tactical taper at 27" mcmillan A3. Sporter. Wyatts DBM and a schmidt&bender 4-16x42 pm II. this guns runs the 130 vld at 2950 and weighs 13 pounds???also have a 22x47 lapua barrel for it for coyotes both are extremely accurate and have taken game well past the 500 yard mark.

I have a 6x47 lapua now and love the gun .. I talked to my gun smith yesterday and he is telling me I should biuld a 6.5 x06 not the 284 .. Anyone have any input on this cartridge ..?..

Pretty much Balistic twins to each other. What one can do the other will as well from what I have seen in Long Range matches. That would be a good choice as well.

The 6.5-284 is a great round my Dad has one and I am going to be building one for my self in a few weeks. You also do not have to have a heavy rifle for it to be accurate. I have a few rifles that weigh 11lbs or less ready to go and they will hold 1/2 or less at 1000 yards or more.

I have a copleted AR lower and all upper components but a 6.5 barrel. I am building a 6.5 grendel. I cant even find a Shilen 6.5 Barrel blank? I hope things get restocked someday soon.
