I want to build a rock chucker!

45 Raptor, got one myself, its good to 300yds with 200gr, 2" group.

I cast 450gr .458 and size to .452 and powder coat. Push them to about 1600fps and it will spin an 8" steel target off the hanger at 100yds.

AR10 is the way to go and only a barrel and mag are needed.

All 460 S&W load data is used as well as dies. Just use a 308 shell holder.

Brass is available from Starline or make your own from 308 or 30-06.

A grendel/x39 based case was considered but I have a .308 bolt face so would require a new bolt or heavy modification

Howdy ! Just now read your post.]]

If you think you'd be happy w/ a .358" calibre wildcat that has case capacity equal or greater in capacity than a notional " .358 Grendel ", then I recommend you consider
the " .358 AutoMag ".

I built one on a 22" 1-16 SS 5-groove custom barrel made by Red Scherer ( late -70s ).
This wildcat ( my idea ) was a simple .001" neck-up in calibre from .357" to .358";
in-order to make use of rifle-calibre bullets.

I used both 6mm BR and 7mm BR basic as parents cases, and used brass made by both Norma and Lapua. This wildcat does use a .308 bolt face.

I used the rifle/cartridge combo mostly for target work, and also used it on groundhogs.

The rifle shot superbly with ( surprisingly ) surplus Remington .35" cal 150PSPs.
My accuracy load was 24gr WW296 and FED BR primer ( SR for Lapua brass ).

If I were to do another one today, I'd set it up for the superlative Cutting Edge .358" calibre 150gr turned brass " Extended Range Raptor " bullet.

I used a Hornady .357AutoMag die set, which I augmented w/ one of their bushing NS dies. Their custom grade " New Dimension " seater die can be equipped w/ their "Micro-just " top; which I really liked a lot.

Another possible idea is to go w/ .35 Remington, outright. I shot my wildcat
" .22-35 Remington " in a WIchita WBR1375 single shot action, which has a .308 bolt face.
My rifle also featured an M-16 style extractor. I never had any trouble w/ feeding or extraction of either loaded cartridges or fired cases. .35 Rem is do-able on a .308 bolt face

An additional notional wildcat case could be a 9.3mm wildcat set-up on shortened and necked-down 7 X 64 Brenneke. This could have a chamber cut by running a 9.3 X 62 reamer in " short ", for a notional .466" base diam. 7 X 64 brass featured the required base diam, and is .308 bolt face " rim less ". Hornady dies that feature case holding "sleeves" allow the dies to be used w/ cases shorter than what they were manufactured for. Use of shortened dies is also a possibility here. For plinking, use of #0000 buck might be possible ?

With regards,
357Mag

458x2 or the 450 Hornady - the same thing in a factory case. Works well. Mind you, I lost my shades with the recoil on the first shot in a modified 303 No4. Landed in the nettles behind me. Wicked bush gun though - 18in barrel. I eventually sold it to a guy who did home kill butchery, so it's probably shot a lot of beef by now.
I built a 450 Marlin bolt rifle, I didn't go 458x2 because it can be chambered in sub 45 caliber magnum actions. The belt on the 50 is proprietary.

Build a 4 bore muzzle loader ... huge bullets about a quarter pound each... and 300 grains of black powder is your starting charge.

I think a 358 is a great project, I am looking into how to get dies for a 358 gremlin. Bryan Farrington marketed it for Indiana hunting. I want to build it because: I have grendel mags and brass, and I have a suppressor that'll allow the big bore. Hunters supply makes some heavy lead that will perform similar to 9x39. If anybody has suggestions for dies please PM me.

Fun project!
Get yourself a good old fashioned 45-70. Henry makes some fine repeaters. That cartridge will do everything you want.
My first thought.
I'd also look at a 35 Remington. I shoot both and they are 300 and 450gr "rock chuckers".
However, I think you want the .432 bolt face, so I'd recommend 45 Raptor or 358 Winchester.
I'm slowly gathering the parts needed to do an AR10 45 Raptor build.

350 Rem mag? 338 Federal? 350 Legend? , 450 Bushmaster? 450 Hornady? 500 S+W?
Plenty of options without wildcatting.

500 S+W Auto MAX is available in 5-round and 9-round magazines and single shot rifles.

Starline has brass in stock currently.

Go big or go home!:eek::D

Enjoy!

many options for a universal necking die or something I could use until I get custom dies?? Any other options welcomed needs to be .308 bolt face.
Old thread but I thought I’d comment on this question for the benefit of others, I know the OP has gone missing but…. I’ve been using a 21st century universal bushing neck die quite a bit, that combined with 4-5 mandrels in every caliber I use have been getting more and more use. The neck die is a great product, very handy. If you’re necking up or down both are handy. I have a few cartridges based on the 6.5x47, 222 and 6BR cases, these Are great for that. They offer quite a few mandrels and bushing for the die.

I have a set also. I agree they work great.
