Walnut Stocks

Kind of like buying a car in 69. A/C, power windows and automatic trans you all had to pay extra for. Now they are standard equipment. Everything comes full circle.

I sure miss the days of buying a new rifle with a nice walnut stock. Seems it is laminate or synthetic now adays.

A piece of nice walnut would cost more than the complete gun. Good wood is hard to come by now.

Walnut stocks are still available. ;) And a lot of gunsmiths have takeoff factory walnut stocks, especially for Remington 700's available at very reasonable prices. Usually in the $50 to $75 price range.

Up to now, both of my F-Class rifles have had 4-layer laminated walnut stocks. Of course, in my mind, a pre-64 Win Model 70 is whatever caliber defines a beautiful gun. However realism has set in and my latest build is on a Precision rifle F-Class Low Rider laminated stock, but Mike Dana's MasterClass walnut stock sure catches my eye:

He can shoot it too.

Here in europe laminate is not so popular. Plastic stocks vs wood is about 50/50.
I make only custom rifles. 3/4 are made with highgrade fiberglas (McMillan) - the rest wood or laminate.

Here two samples with lower grade walnut - well made it looks good too:

There is a company called Accurate Innovations which produces high quality wood stocks with an aluminum chassis system .I have one in 300 Jarret built on a Predator action. It shoots as good as my other hunting guns built with synthetics.
