Vudoo V22 Breakin

Had been wanting one of these for a while and finally got one to play with. An unfired V22 22LR , Masterpiece Arms Comp Chassis, 20" Mtu Threaded 20 MOA, Timney Trigger. Mounted a Sightron SVSSED 10-50 on on it, sighted it in in a couple of shots and shot a 25 and 50 yard group. (Love this scope.)

Next thing I did was change out the Timney trigger, as it was too heavy for my taste, to a Triggertech Diamond. The Tommey is a nice crisp trigger that I would not complain about for hunting purposes or field use. Just not good for me at the bench. My Ezell tuner came in record time so I screwed it on and moved to 100. (Thanks Mike!! Stellar has usual.)

Figure that I can play with the gun and tuner while getting some shots down the barrel before sending it to the test center. Not sure but I think I read somewhere that you need a 1000 or so rounds for the barrel to settle down.

My first observation is that they do not all go into the same hole, even when you do your part. Gun handling is somewhat different for this chassis. Still, these things are flat out fun to shoot. I am adjusting the tuner 2 marks per group, started at 0. Best 5 shot group was 1.003 inch so far. I went from a 1 inch group at ten to 1.5 or so at 12 so I moved it back to 11 and it shot another 1 inch group.

Not making any assumptions this early Just making notes. I will update this thread as I continue down the rabbit hole.

My time precision came with a tuner and I took it off ,it just was one more thing I kept screwing with. I'm probably just too hard headed to get used to it but I'm getting very good accuracy without it.

Try this test. Make the target just like this one(below). With a rf, only two differences....Move the tuner two marks at a time instead of one mark and shoot 5 shot groups instead of 3 shot groups. Do this at 50 yards, use windflags and your best ammo! That's important! You have to trust every shot on the test. You should see the same sine wave and group shapes appear and repeat, predictably. This is for my RF tuner. I have slightly different instructions for centerfire(which that target is) and I don't give instructions for other makes of tuners, except that the most common mistake they make is moving them too far at a time. Often WAYYY too far at a time.
Fire 15 five shot groups on your rimfire rifle for this test.

This is likely part of the problem. I am shooting Federal Auto Match. I will use it until I get 500 or so shoots down the barrel and then try the Theo lots of Cwnter X that I have.

Also, the barrel only has 100 rounds down it. I don’t know what the break in time is, but figure it will get better as it seasons. Still playing with the tuner, I shot a few rounds yesterday, including a 10 shot 1 inch group at 100 at the setting I believe is close to in tune. The preceding 5 shot group was looking good until that 1 flier.

Last, the recoil of the 22 is different than a centerfire. It seems to vary from shot to shot. Do you guys shoot free recoil from a rest or firm hold?

I am at the 22 setting on the tuner. Once I get all the way around I will move in from 100 yards to 50 and start all over.

With Federal Auto Match, it's like putting watered down regular unleaded in a high performance sports car. You're not going to get high performance results.

When you shoot your CX, you may wish to shoot without a tuner to establish a baseline for that particular lot of ammo. Other lots of CX may well shoot differently. When you know what ammo will shoot well, then experiment with the tuner. A tuner can't make poorly shooting ammo shoot like it's the good stuff.

Regarding "breaking in" a barrel, with .22LR it's generally not necessary. A good quality rimfire barrel should shoot well from the beginning.

I'm just curious, many times barrel condition comes in to play with groups shifting slightly with lubricated lead bullets. Is this taken into consideration?

It looks like some of your 1st and last groups are very similar in size as how do you pick the spot in your tuner to stick with?.
I'm asking because I tore the tuner off of my bench rifle because I was getting intermittent results with settings .it was probably me not understanding how it should work.
 
The Lapua Test Center used to request that anyone sending or bringing a 22RF rifle to be tested put around 1000rds through a new barrel before getting it tested. Due to the ammunition shortage, they've relaxed their request a bit I believe. I've thought about doing what 10XSHOOTER mentioned - if all Lapua is after is to ensure that a new barrel has had at least enough ammo through it to smooth the leade out to reflect the performance and ammo preference that it's likely to have for the bulk of its useful accuracy life, why not use some HV ammo that could well accomplish that wear-in with fewer rounds? As long as there's no fouling left behind by the copper wash, it shouldn't hurt anything...
 
Dusty, I've never tried to run any of my old WW Super-X or Federal Hi-power HV ammo through any of my Vudoo repeaters, all of which but one were chambered with my EPS reamer. The one exception is one I bought as a bbl'd action direct from VGW, which I assume has their Ravage chamber. As far as that goes, I've never ran ANY copper-washed ammo through any of my custom barreled rifles, which include a couple of 40X repeaters converted to use V22 mags, a Stiller 2500XR, a couple of CZ457s with Shilen ratchets, and a Rim-X. Always seemed almost like a sacrilege to put that stuff through a custom barrel that I'd paid good money for, and worked to fit & chamber...lol Still, extraordinary times lead to extraordinary measures - or so they say.
