Vortex Spotting Scopes

I'm in the market for a new spotting scope. I came across a guy at a gun show last weekend about 90 miles from me that is selling the Vortex and I'm thinking of trying it out but, I don't want to buy and then waste my $600 bucks.

Anyone using either of the 80mm's?

Frank

If you could tell me which model you are referring to I can tell you more about it. Since you said it is an 80mm I am going to guess that it is one of our old Skylines that we dis-continued and at that price it should be the ED model. We recently released the new Viper spotting scopes that are available in 80mm and 65mm in both HD and non-HD models ,but I dont think anyone at a gun show would have them yet. Then we also have the 85mm Razor HD which is our high end model. I know John Hoover has been using the Razor HD as of late, so if you respect his advice I would give him a call at his shop and see what he thinks about them.

Anyways if it is indeed a Skyline I would spend a few more bucks and pick up a new Viper HD.

Feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions.

Scott,
I checked back into it and it is a Skyline and the price was $499 not $600.

They also have a Viper HD @ $699 or a XD @ $799.

I only shoot at 200 yards max. I'm wondering if the 32X fixed might not be a better way for me to go. I've read that fixed lenses give a little better diffintion. I want to be able to spot 22 cal holes in a red back ground, even on a hot day. I'm sure that a 32X would do that for me but, if there is no difference in clearity at all, I'd rather have variable.

What do you think?

i have a skyline that i bought used a few years ago. 20-60-80mm. it works great. glass is very clear. a few weeks back i let a guy use it while i was in the pits and he left it out during a rain delay and other than the soft cover getting soaked it handled a half hour rain with no issues. the variable power is nice. i do use it on 60x when i practice alone from 600 yards.
