Vortex Golden Eagle Scope

I asked because so far folks have compared this to a NF Comp, Comp model seems a bit touchy with the eye relief.. I would like to sit behind one..

Ray

I got to sit behind lonnies this weekend at our 1k championship. I noticed the eye relief "criticality ". It is similar to the nf comp in that regard. Lonnie went on to win the title with it BTW!

Glass, Okay? Must of held zero..

Ray

I would say for the money its the best deal. The Br scopes are great, just heavy. The March scopes glass could be a little better, but at least they hold zero. If this Vortex holds up then it will be one of the most popular scopes for competition ever IMO.

has any one put one of these on a ruger precision 6.5 creedmoor yet . I'm curious how this scope will work out to 1200yds or beyond .
thanks rich

This scope has 55MOA internal travel. your going to have to have a lot of cant in the base for 1200yds and beyond. This is a BR scope, not a LR shooting scope.

This isn't a good scope for an extreme long-range gun. The 1/8 MOA clicks are sort of wasted in that application, and the limited elevation travel (55 MOA) should probably zero at 100yd on an RPR (but you might need to settle for a 200yd zero), and will bottom out right around 1200yd with a 140gr Hybrid at 2700-2750fps.

I'd look for something with 100+MOA of elevation travel. That pretty much rules out these super high-power competition scopes. Is there any reason you're looking for such high power? What size targets are you shooting at 1200yd?

It's the best scope I've ever used in competition. I might not take my word for it, though, if I were you as I could be a bit biased.

One of the driving design goals I had for this scope was to spend my cost budget on the things that are most influential to how we perform in competition. This meant concentrating on rock solid tracking and an optical prescription that focused on the ability to resolve mirage for the purpose of more timely decision-making mid-string. A lot of hours over the past 2 years, both on the range and in the test lab, comparing the Golden Eagle to other scopes has resulted in it excelling in those two areas. The cost/benefit of things like a zero-stop and illumination were outweighed by keeping the cost ($1500) more reasonable. I wanted the raw performance of this scope to meet or exceed the best known-distance weight-concious options out there, but at a more accessible price, helping to grow the sport overall and hopefully raise the average level of performance of our fellow competitors.
How much does a zero stop cost? If it's good enough for March and Nightforce then it should have been good enough for Vortex. Sorry bad call.

On a NF a zero stop costs you $250.

I said from day one that the ZS was a waste of metal on a NF competition. Where do you set it? 100 yards? Does anyone who regularly shoots at 1000 yards need a ZS to get back to 100? My main competition rifle, the one that my NF comp rides on has the knobs zeroed at 1000 yards on my home range, not that a "zero" at 1000 yards even is. It may work at 10AM and 75F, at 3PM and 95 you need to come down a minute.

I talked with NF about the scope after they built it. They put on the ZS knowing it would almost never be used by competitors but that it was a selling point that people want for some reason. Just look at the number of people wanting to get one on the late version discontinued NXS scopes. (have 2 12-42NXS's no ZS, don't want on on those either)

Shooters in the target market for this scope have no real use for a ZS whether they know it or not.

Now on my Steiner M5Xi, yea, that ZS can be darned useful.

I'm thinking I'm going to put one of these on one of my rifles and see how I like it, if I do maybe I'll clear out some of my NF scopes.

Edit: One more thing about ZS, even for scopes on 'tactical' type rifles. ZS was first put on rifles that had maybe 15MOA or 5Mils on the knobs, some less. Cranking out to 1000 and beyond it was pretty easy to lose count. My Steiner mentioned above, and pretty much any other high end 'tactical' type scope has 10 mils per rev., 10 mils will get a 308 to 1000 yards or beyond, much less anything remotely revved up. Point being you are less than one turn from your "zero" setting on the knob for 90something% of your shooting. Unless you fancy yourself as some "operator" who shoots at night and has to find zero in the dark just how hard it it to dial back to zero? If your behind the scope that "0" in front of you is pretty obvious. I can say that I have in the past gotten lost on a NF BR in both windage and elevation with only 6MOA on the knobs.

on my long range rifles I use enough taper in my base to get the elevation turret in the first revolution from the bottom so I have all the scopes internal adjustments available,,so when I dial the scope all the way down and come up to the first 0 on the knob that is my close range zero,,

on my target scopes I try and get both turrets as close to the center of their adjustments as possible with the rifle zeroed at the range the rifle will be used the most at,,

I really hope the Vortex scope is the real deal,,I would love a scope in that power range for my UBR rifle without the NF Comp price tag,,

I just received my golden eagle and put it on my new long dasher. I like it better than my night force competition, so I sokd the night force. it is clearer and with my 80 year old eyes I could see bullet holes at 600 yard target. Waiting for my new one to put it on my 6.5 by 47. very good scope
