VLD question

have any of you guys had problems shooting some of the tooth pick type bullets at 100 yards. My 7mm rem mag will shoot A-maxes really well at 400. I can't get them to shoot for crap at 100. Make F-class targets all the time to scale for how far I'm shooting. 250. Always 10s and X's. 100-probably not?????? Why?

well...... the answer that I have gotten is the bullet has not fully stabilized at that point. I've been told to shoot for groups at 200+ yards as the bullet should be stable by this point. Is this true, I don't know. I have a hard time believing this explanation but I can say that at at 100 yards my 6.5 VLDs will shoot 1/2 inch and at 200 yards they will shoot 1/2 inch and at 300 yards they will shoot 3/4 inch or less. My testing shows that accuracy does improve at greater distances which holds water to what I've been told. I have not seen this with any of my smaller 224 bullets that I compete with only the longer 6.5 VLDs.

I'd love to hear from more experienced shooters myself on this subject.

I think Mr. Bergers method of shooting groups by loading rounds with various seating depths (ladder test method) touching., .025, .o50, and .100 off the lands will show you which seating depth puts the projectile to sleep fastest for shooting short range. It would be easy to try with just a dozen rounds or so and may make a difference in your short range game.

I've never had a problem with A Max's at close range, but I've never been able to get VLD's to group close up. It's a little disconcerting but they do score well at range. I have driven myself crazy a couple of times over this.

Thats why flat base bullets dominate 200-300 yard competition. The boattail bullets will "go to sleep" as the distance extends.

If you can shoot 3/4" or less at 300yds then you ARE the experienced shooter.

The length of the A-Max is nothing try 1.650 for a 200 grain 7mm bullet now that is long but oh how they shoot! Yes if you want to test for accuracy with a VLD then 200yrds. is the starting point. But when you get your load down how well they shoot (well most of the time!)

If they are shooting good at 400 they are shooting good at 100.
Place your 100 yard targets 1 foot up into your 400 yard targets line of sight and shoot at 400 yards. This will allow your good 400 yard targets to be compared to your bad 100 yard targets shot for shot.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm always learning something new on these boards so I feel far from experienced but thanks again. :-[
