It's normally not that bad. LOL. That was while the pile driver was a work in progress. Plus that's only one side of the room. I have benches on 2 sides and a desk on the other. It wouldn't be too bad if I could get the shotgun stuff out of there as well as a couple of friends' stuff. If I would have been starting with a new barrel, I think I would have just fireformed them but I don't know.

Jim,
I know,...me too!
Wayne.

Jason,
I meant nothing bad about your bench, I have a beautiful loading room, I did all the wood work myself, birdseye pine and cedar, the birdseye is finished with true oil gunstock finish, made all my own molding and everything, .......can't see any of it, it's a total mess ;)
Wayne.

My crappy loading room, won't show you the bench because I can't find it, the temporary shelves are bad enough!

Okay but remember you asked for it, as it was when I opened the door today.
Sorry to the op as it is off topic but they asked.
Wayne.

I should clarify that I am using rubbing alchohol not denatured alchohol, it works great. Oil would be a horrible mess.

zfastmalibu,

I'm the guy that did the article on the Hornady Hydro-die a while back, which was posted on the Daily Bulletin. I just wanted to let you know I think your videos are great! They deserve to be on the Daily Bulletin more than my 'picture-and-text' description of how these things work. I'll have to try the rubbing alcohol... I've always used distilled water.

One question, which I get a lot from people curious about these dies... what's the case length after the forming process?

Mine are right around 1.535 with blue box. Short I guess according to some but they are consistent.

some guys make a big deal out of getting a finished piece of brass at or above 1.55.

All my brass is already 'processed, and fired multiple times, so I'm not 100% sure where they're finishing at after hydro-forming. I have two pieces laying around that were formed only (not trimmed or 'processed' in any way, and both measure 1.55. not much of a sample size though.

Thanks for the compliment, 1.542'' is about average. I do not care about case length, I don't see how it will shrink groups. I read something a while ago that Tony Boyer did some testing and found no accuracy loss is short cases.

I agree.

Some guys make the argument that the 'extra neck' in the chamber (in front of a 'short case') will get carbon buildup, which can start to 'pinch' the end of the case, causing inconsistent neck tension... similar to the condition that occurs when case neck grows too long, and starts pushing up into the free bore. I don't know if that's a valid argument or not. I can say I've never had a problem with it (that I know of)

Carbon build up is a definite problem! I told Kif on my last ream to shorten it up, there is no way no matter the method to consistently get 1.55 without damaging the brass, 1.542-1.547 is the norm for most. I have had it 1.57 but that isn't normal or consistent, with carbon build up there is accuracy issues, especially at longer ranges because it will change velocity which will give you vertical, were not shooting hunting rigs in Africa here there bench rest rifles, the standard .010 is way too much as far as I am concerned I think .003-.005 clearance is way plenty. then there is no build up issue, the way a standard 6brx or 6 dasher ream is ground and your only blowing your cases to 1.542, you could have over .020 in some cases, and .018 for sure!...Thats just too much IMO. I agree the short brass hurts nothing in the accuracy department, but a carbon ring will.
Wayne.

Wayne, that makes sense. I have a very good cleaning regiment, and keep my brass trimmed perfect. guess that's why I have not noticed that issue before. I think you were wise to have your reamer shortened up. I may try another reamer next year, I will remember that.

Alex,
This has been a very good thread, I have followed it from the beginning and have enjoyed all the posts and peoples ideas on the subject.
