VIDEO... Charging Bear Pistol Test

Actually great information, and interesting test results. I've carried my 10mm 1911 Springfield the last few tears in Idaho black bear hunting, both with hounds and bait, instead of a revolver for the same reasons as the video shows. My friend, a full time outfitter for bears and cougars has switched from a .41 Mag Blackhawk to a .40 S&W semi auto for the ability for faster follow up shots too, especially when the bear comes out of the tree wounded.

Wonder how he would have fared if the rifles were still on his shoulder in the sling, kinda like the pistols still in the holster? Pretty good test except if it would have been real I would have scared the bear screaming like a little b***h or it would have thought I was a dying rabbit..

From what I saw, except for the brain shots, that guy ended up being bear poop more often than not when he was using a pistol. Even with the brain shots, that bear might die right on top of him.

If I EVER get in bear country, it's going to be with a reliable AR in a larger caliber with appropriate bullets that will penetrate that thick skull.

Shotgun looked good but I believe by the time you get over the surprise and react your poop . Would be hard to get that off the shoulder and get some lead in them. Carrying with both hands sounds good but would be extremely tiring. I got tired carrying my shotgun when rabbit and quail hunting.

The 9, 40, 10 (fmj) all have the necessary penitration (40"+ in gel) to bust through a grizzlys skull. Use whatever you shoot the best. Ultimately shot placement / luck dictate if you are going to walk away or not...lol
Great video.
Interesting you compare the skull of a grizzly to ballistic gel, when in fact 30-30 have bounced off of grizzly skulls………. Read a book called the wolf man of Alaska he hunted grizzlys and brown bears and wolf for a living from 1915-1955 he preferred the. 220 swift after it was invented (1935ish) he said it was the only round that would reliably penetrate the skull of a brown bear……

Don't take my word for it....lol. The 220 swift the only cartridge being able to penetrate a grizzly skull is nonsense.

I like this.....quoted from the article:

"Many people claim that handguns are useless for protection against bears. Numerous examples have shown that this is a false notion. Handguns may not be ideal as defensive weapons for bears, but they can be effective. In a defensive situation, you have to use what is available."

I read that book, twice. That guy was full of shit. If he were alive today he’d be an oracle on 24 hour campfire and the fguffey fan club president.

It is nonsense with a capital "N". Many bullets will do the job. It depends on the angle of a frontal shot since the skull is slanted. A good bullet will go completely through a skull if hit from the side, back, or proper frontal angle.
