Vias for LR vermin-sort of??

Just thinking about this and would love your learned advice on this........

Years ago there was an article about the .224 Vias- Was interested at the time but ran out of $$ to persue it.

Now that I have my own reamer I was thinking of making a 6mm Vias- sort of??
On a 1:8 Barrel I plan to use a 6.5x55 body reamer to initially make the chamber then make/finish the neck and shoulder with my .272 6BR Norma reamer to go guage length,with slight crush.

Should give me a 30 Degree 6mmBRx55mm.
Should be easily be able to get 3800++ fps with a 75 V-max with mild pressure using Lapua Brass. Maybe even 3700 with the 87 V-Max or 90 Scenar.

Suggestions, opnions, advice-- love to hear what you think of this idea??

Hi ogre you could use the 6.5 for the body and the 6mm for the neck and throat at that is what we are doing here to make a 30-284 use the 284 for the body and a 308 for the neck/throat but you might run into problems changing the shoulder angle as the body taper on the br is different than the 6.5 if you just neck and throat the 6.5 body you will still be able to use standard 6.5 dies as body dies and make your own neck die or you could get a type s Full die for the 6.5x55 and use a 6mm bushing and make a 6mm seater or use a universal seater.

Ogre i looked back through dimensions and you may be able to just long chamber with the 6mm BR reamer to make a 6mmx55BR the larger base on the 6.5x55 may work with the extra depth of the chamber i would go this route if you try to use two reamers and have a tapered step in the side of the case and chamber you will have troubles sizing and accuracy see if you can have a barrel deep chambered and then neck down a 6.5x55 case in a 6mm BR to give the same case neck and shoulder diameter then see how it will fit in the deep chamber.

Sounds like the ballistics of a 6mm AI with a 30* shoulder angle....except 6 Rem is 57mm. Those numbers are very doable in a 6 Rem AI with 26" bbl with R#19.

You are correct. The Vais is within 2 grains of capacity to the 22-6mm Rem. A.I. There's another similar version called the 22 Eroder based on the 6.5x55. Wildcatters pursuing the use of a 6.5x55 parent case have chosen it for the Lapua brass advantages.

I can certainly understand wanting to use the Lapua brass. My friend in Co. shoots the 80g A max at 3650 in his 6 AI and neck sizes, probably trying to save brass,26" bbl.

Too bad we can not get Lapua 7x57 brass here. I have 50 rounds rat holed back that I scrounged from a guy in Canada.

I assume this is for some .22 based on the 6.5X55. I like the name -- "22 Eroder". Doesn't Lapua make brass having a rim/base diameter of .473? Seems like spending lots of money on building a rifle that would be limited to a 6.5X55 parent case having a rim/base diameter of .480 and a body diameter of .480 just ahead of the extractor groove would be sort of restrictive and have production challenges. Should I want a big capacity .22 I would look at the .22-6mm or .22-.243. Lapua might have .243 brass. Possibly, there us something magic about the 6.5X55 case allowing it to thrive on elevated pressures that would quickly destroy other cases of like capacity. I keep about 200 -1500 pieces of brass available for each caliber rifle I own and accept a 2-3 % velocity reduction for lower pressures than might be obtained using Lapua brass. I do have an appreciation for Lapua brass as shown by frequent use of my 6.5X47 (about $1 plus per piece but many reload cycles) but I have no plans to neck that down to .22.
