300 RUM

other than amo being slightly tweaked in a loose scope for scope rings are scope base etc what are some of the more common causes for vertical string?

Grip and shoulder pressure can do it if shooting from prone position, don't ask me how I know.....

so do I want a nice firm hold into my shoulder?

My 223 likes firm shoulder pressure. I don't grip it tight with my hand or pull it into my shoulder, I just lean into it(shooting off a bench and usind a rest). And when I use my bipod I pre-load it.

Front action screw came loose!

Yup, that will do it!! All this work and a little thing gets you off track.

I'll add to this post:. To check your bedding, stand your rifle up then loosen and tighten each screw with your finger touching the end of the stock and the barrel looking for movement. This will give you a indicator of a high spot in the bedding between the screws.

would you recommend low-strength Loctite in the future

Hi ultra mag,,,I check my acton screws before sighting in ,,every time,,,if the gun has sat (especially with a wooden stock) for a while ,,check em,,,,after shooting several rounds...check em,,,,a high recoil rifle will shake things up a lot,,,I have never had one come loose,,,dont use locktite,,,
the bigest cause of vertical (other than loose action screw--loose scope rings--loose bbl.--etc) is ,,,not enuff powder/pressure in the load,,,if the chamber pressure is low the powder will not burn properly,,,sorta like running your car with the choke pulled,,,,smokey case necks tell the tale,,,Roger

"Sometimes" tight is just not good enough! ;)

Savage Action Screw Torque Tuning

And for you Enfield Rifle lovers. :o

A loose fore stock will cause vertical stringing, and a loose butt stock will cause horizontal stringing.

I found out about this at a 1k match Saturday. Shoulder pressure and grip will definitely give you vertical. Fighting a rifle that's not tracking straight will have you trying to man handle the rifle and shots will go up and down.
