Velocity Question

Wild Bill

Good way to make the discussion take a quick wrong turn. Short stroking is just the tip but I digress

Yeah so I have to call bear creek arsenal and see what they say. I first want to get my loads dialed in and then work on the cycling. It’s been a whirl wind with hunting season coming up next month, hunting camp work days, scouting for hunting areas (new) and getting my daughter off to college.

I did load (5) of the 190gr with 8gr of clays using magnum primers. My thinking is the magnum primers burn hotter and faster maybe? I also did load (5) of the 190gr also woth 8gn of Clays. I’ll probably go to camp tomorrow or Friday.

Also purchased a trickled since the Lyman Gen 6 is always off between .1/.3 grains. So I was adding powder with a small spatula by hand to get to 8gn.

This is the trickler I got. I will load (5) rounds using the trickler only and also see what those speeds are.

More updates to come.

Thanks everyone for your guidance, recommendations and support it is greatly appreciated

The start of fall is a busy time!!! Especially with kids going back to school and college!!! Prepping for the big game season is also strenuous!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE HUNTERS THIS SEASON, AND STAY SAFE!!!!

Keep us updated on your load development!!! I'm really interested in your testing with mag primers!!! I've been thinking about trying mag primers in cartridges larger than 60 grains of powder!!!!

Alright guys was able to get to camp between conference calls and able to try out my three reloads.

Load #1: 8gn of Clays, 190gn Sub-x, Federal 210 primer. Powder measured out using Lyman Gen 6 which seemed to always throw off by about .3gn so hand trickled the remaining amount to 8gns.

Load #2: same as load one except I used a trickler to measure out the 8gn’s of Clays

Load #3: same as load two except I used magnum rifle primers.

Load 1: image 3887
Load 2: image 3886
Load 3: image 3885

Now in the pics on the 3rd set of 5 I got an error on the 3rd shot and that was the outlier.

Next step may be 8.5 grains but I really think 8 grains is good for now. I am going to load some more using the trickler only to 8gn, non-magnum primer and use ballistics gel to see what damage is done.

Oh and these were all at 95 yds from a rest

Ok guys went out again today to try a few things.

Image: 3901

Was shot at 50 yards using 7.5gn of Clays, no filler and the one zinger was without suppressor. The remaining 4 rounds were suppressed.

Image: 3902

Was with 8gn of Clays suppressed

When I am at 8gn I am basically transonic so stepped load down to the 7.5.

Next it to try the 7.5 at 100 yds.

I did recover a bullet from over The Weeknd that went through 10% ballistics gel from clear ballistics and weight retained was 187.3gn

Thoughts

Probably the first thing is to define the goal.
Do you want a subsonic load?
Do you want the action to cycle?
These are two different goals and really should be approached independently.

A question I never saw an answer to, might have missed, can you move the bullet out, longer COL?

How committed are you to not modifying the rifle?

Side note, unless you drop below about 950 fps, you will always be shooting trans sonic.

Desire subsonic and I am pretty happy with the speeds I had yesterday.

Once I get the load figured out then I’ll work on the adjustable gas block and work on getting the gun to cycle

Right now the bullet is seated as far out as possible based off of loading manual. 2.690”

Modify the gun. Yeah I’m open to that. What did you have in mind? I was also thinking to going to a bolt action upper.?

Loading manual lengths mostly don’t have a lot of meaning. But with odd combinations like this, they might. There are a few limiting factors for loaded length. Manuals often use longest possible in a magazine, or seated to the cannelure. It seems rare that it’s the bullet seated .010” off the lands.

You need to find out the longest you can seat that bullet in your brass, the way you have prepped it. You also need to find the shortest, this will be where the bearing surface of the bullet slips into the case below the mouth.

An adjustable gas block has a limiting feature, the port in the barrel. In reality the adjustable block is designed to reduce gas flow on an over gassed system. It really can’t increase flow over what the barrel was designed to allow. You need to pull the block and measure the port. Most likely it’s less than .125”, wouldn’t be surprised to find it around .100” or less. .125” is max, over that has no value as the rest of the gas system would need to be to be modified. You can open up the port and allow more gas, but be aware shooting supers.

No reason to buy a bolt action upper, just turn of the gas completely and use the charging handle to cycle the action.

Thanks for your response. Only reason why I was thinking of getting a bolt action upper was for hog hunting. I still want to hunt suppressed for hogs though and if the gun doesn’t cycle now of course the bolt action will help with follow up shots or shooting at multiple pigs

Well in a stroke of luck I was able to acquire (2) 9oz bottles of Trail Boss. Ordered them and now waiting for them. Since it seems Trail Boss is the preferred powder for this application.

I haven’t tried pistol primers. I’ve tried rifle magnum primers and not much differnce

Was able to acquire 2 cans of Trailboss. Using 190 Sub-x and first 10 rounds were loaded to 10gn and second set of 10 rounds was loaded to 9.5. Pretty happy with the 9.5gn load out. I did one set of 6 rounds prior to today at 10.5gn and they were both quite subsonic so have these two loads.

Next test will be with 175gn Sub-x bullets

So was able to get out today and shoot a few rounds quickly. Some were subsonic and some were transonic. Going to try 10.5gn of TB tomorrow with the 175 Sub-x.

Seems so far the 190gn is best with TB
