Thats one reason ;D
The other reason is that they will make more and it fun feeding the birds ;)

Rats / Skunks - Knowing there is one less in the area.

Coyotes - Eliminating certain pests. They eat many rats and for that reason usually get a pass from me unless they are harassing livestock.

PDs - Helping out the neighbors. Preventing migration. None here, but many within 10 miles.

All - Shooting, learning the wind, etc.

P-Dogs (Rats) are stupid critters that create havoc whilst one is walking across the Red Desert in Wyoming. Ever bust an ankle in a p-dog hole? Shooting P-Dogs for sport makes a viable living for many western ranchers who otherwise struggle for survival, and would otherwise poison-out the rascally rats. Do not judge, lest ye be judged, especially when you don't understand the reality of it all. Such as when are too many wolves more than enough . . . Cliffy

i have rancher friends that loose cattle to broken legs, pd holes, etc and have had to cut to 4-500 head from 6-700 head re loss of pasture due to pd distruction,

shooting helps keep the dogs in their area, provieds lots of shooting practice, range varies, wind, mirage, up hill, down hill, you learn a lot about your gun and ammo, makes you a better shooter, while helping the rancher hold in check a pest

Varmint hunting is probably the most challenging type of hunting imaginable. You are shooting at a small target at long distance. Your rifle has to be right, load, optics, etc. If affords you the opportunity to shoot offhand, bipod, sitting. Every skill you can muster comes into play when you're hunting varmints.
