Varmint Rifles

Hey guys!! My brother is looking to buy a new varmint rifle. He mostly hunts coyotes and red fox. I my self am a custom rifle guy for the competition disciplines, he is factory gun buyer that wants something to shoot good. Any suggestions on factory varmint rifles to buy in 22-250 with synthetic stock, bolt action? He has a Win. Model 70 Coyote Light and a Model 700 VTR in .204 Ruger, Im wondering if any body has had luck with other manufactures like Tikka, Kimber, Ruger for out of the box performance?

I am a 700 fan but I've heard of alot good things about Tikka, no personal experience with Tikka

Not sure what he wants to spend, but I've had good luck with the accuracy of Cooper rifles right out of the box.

Plenty of accurate rifles available. How accurate can he afford to spend?
I also like the Coopers, but you can get acceptable accuracy out of the Rems, Tikkas, Savages, etc.

I bought my son a Tika 300 WSM for graduation. He likes it very well. He is a hunter and not a shooter, gun dont have 150 rounds down the tube. Ive loaded em all.

he wopuld buy another and probably in the 300 WSM caliber, deer and he lived in CO for a year. He and grandDAUGHTER both shot elk w/ it. I downloaded some ammo for her. She busted the elk at 263 measured yards-dead.

He took the gun and had to shoot 2 or 3 times for his BUT they had run off a ways in the meantime.

Sounds to me like he has 2 good factory guns now that will work on both. Look at a AR-15 platform, Rock River is a good place to start. Accurate out of the box and lots of varmint fun.

If he wanted a .223 or .204 a CZ 527 is hard to beat. I am not as familiar with the CZ 550 which is the action he would need in a .22-250. Sako is hard to beat, but kind of pricey due to exchange rate. I have had several CZ's and Sako's in various calibers and all shot very well.

I would do your homework and find an old Remington.
Those guns just flat out shot and don't break the bank once you are able to find one.
A guy can pick up a take off stock fairly inexpensive to go that route for a stock too.

The Winchester Mod. 70 Coyote Light is manufactured in everything from 22-250 to 325 WSM (.223 excepted). Depending on the caliber he currently has, I'd say he may already have as good a coyote gun as he might find elsewhere.
If he's hell bent to buy a new gun and wants something light and accurate the Tikka in .223 would be worth a look.

I have the CZ527 in 204 and 223 and the CZ550 in 22-250 and I would suggest any of them. Also the price is reasonable.

After a ton of reading and researching opinions, I decided to buy a Rem 700 SPS Varmint .308. I'm a new precision shooter. I was looking for a solid rifle that can be upgraded as my skill progresses. Seems the Rem 700 is the preferred platform. I got my SPS for $630 from a local Bass Pro, and Rem has a current $50 rebate on the SPS varmints, and then used a $25 gift card from my family so my net cost was $555 . I also opted to get a B&C Medalist 5 stock as I much prefer pistol grip types. Also purchsed a Sightron III 8-36X scope so i'm good to go as my local gun club has a 600 meter range that I need to qualify for ! Now it's all up to me !

I suggest the rifle pictured below (Rem 700 VSSF bedded into a McMillan A3 stock, with under 400 rounds fired, i.e. just getting warmed up). Yes, it's a .22-250, and is in excellent condition. Buy it for $1095 shipped to your FFL in the lower 48 states:

I am a remmy,savage guy and custom,but for out of the box smoothness in the action and decent accuracy the tikka is the most affordable smooth action there is in a good price range.
