varmint & range scope

Guys,
I'm looking for a varmint and range use scope. i'm looking for something starting at about 3-4 power on the low end. Going to about 16 power on the high end. The scope will be on a 223 20" barrel rem 700. Don't want to spend a ton of money just want good optics. Which scope do y'all recommend? TIA

Great scope for a decent price...Burris Fullfield II series, Bushnell banner series, Sightron, Mueller, their eraticator scopes are very well thought of for the budget minded varminter), Weaver.
The more power with less cost equals chance for failure in the field, at a match, or just trying to make small groups on a Sunday afternoon. There is no substitute for good glass.
Anything less,I am sure I am missing a few in the same category) and you will not be happy with your purchase. Anything more and you may be spending a lot for not much gain until you hit the $1,000 range.

The best advice I have received/given is buy the best you can afford. If you have $200, come as close as you can for your needs. You DO, in the majority of the cases, get what you pay for with optics.
Hope this helps,
Mike

First of all, I feel a varmint/target scope should be higher power. 6.5-20 on the bottom end and I prefer more than that. Also for this application I prefer fine crosshair's and or small dots. In the mid price range I like Weaver, Sightron and the old B&L scopes. I consider the Burris Fullfields to be a step below these. I haven't used the higher end Burris stuff, but if I was going to buy in that range, I'd just buy Leupold.

I will second the vote for Leupold. I have two guns for Varmints/coyote calling and I favor the 6.5x20 leupold for a good crossover scope. I like my leupold target dot as well, but in low light situations, coyote calling) the target dot is not good. I like the fine duplex for the lower light. If your gun is a deddicated varmint/paper gun then the dot would be good choice.

I have shot with the Swift scopes and found them to be on par with some of the Simmons scopes. Other scopes that I have used are the Tasco World Class Plus scopes and the Nikon Monarch. The Nikon is very under rated and worth looking at. I own three of the Nikon scopes and I am very pleased with them.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

Guys,
I already have a a 6.5x20 leupold. I'm looking for something a little shorter in length. With target turrets. The scope will be for a short barrel varmint rifle. The rifle setup is:
Rem 700 sa blueprinted
rock 5r barrel 20" 1/4" flutes
mcm a5 stock fully adjustable
Jewell trigger

Guys,
Has anyone checked out the sightron side focus 1" tube scopes?
What did you think good or bad? Let me know.TIA

Guys,
What do y'all think of the leupold vx3 4.5-14x40 ao matte varmint reticle? I think it is part number 61125.

Guys,
Has anyone used a sightron side focus 1" tube mildot scope? What are your thoughts? TIA

Hey PJ,

I use a burris 4.5x14x42 on my 6br and for the money it works great. The balistic-plex works good for fast hold over mark if I don`t have time to make ajustments. I don`t like it for shootin paper though, reticles too wide but for shootin bugs under 500yrds it will do the job . I wish I got the 6x24 for longer shoots.

PJ-- I have a Sightron II 6.5-20x50mm SF Mil-Dot scope. I haven't gotten into using the Mil-Dot feature yet, but the scope seems clear enough. However, in a side-by-side comparison against my Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40mm long range side focus scope with a heavy duplex, I have to say I prefer the Leupold for clarity and brightness--JMHO

One small problem I had with the Sightron side focus was that the knob was way too easy to turn. It would rub on my clothing as I carried it by the sling and the focus knob would turn. I contacted Sightron customer service and they said send it in. That is where the scope is now. Hopefully, they'll get the side focus problem fixed.

Midway USA has a sale on right now on Nikon Monarch 4x16 279.oo.
These are new scopes with the Ballistic Drop Compesator side Parallax adjutment check it out at www.midwayusa.com. I asked optic planet to price match and they responded that they couldn't match this price as they would lose money.

The Nikon Monarch is a very good scope. In my opinion just as good as the higher priced Leupolds. Don't misunderstand I am not putting down Leupolds I have a few. But at 279.00 the Monarch can't be touched.

The Leupold 4.5-14x V-III you are asking about would be an excellent scope. I like the idea of the extra bars for holdover. Mil-dots might be ok too. I have a 3.5-10x. My next scope is going to be a target or tactical scope for long range adjustments. Otherwise the 4.5 -14 would be in the tip 3 choices.
