Varmint Hunter Magazine Memories

When I retired, my wife asked me if I wanted to go any where special. I said, yes I wanted to go to the VH Jamboree and compete. She said "you want to what?". So off we went. With my Remington 40XB, Unertle 15X Ultra Varmint scope and Canjar trigger. First day I was in the top 10 out of 80+ shooters with almost no wind. Don't ask me about the second day when the wind was about 20mph. No Kestrel or range finder (except my Barr and Stroud) in 1998. Some great memories.

Found it...April 2001. Surprised me as that was from a day in the 90's. By 2001 I had retired and permanently moved from Pa. to Florida. Seemed to remember a delay and wondering if it would ever be published.

Did not remember that two members - Scott Vietmeier (from Alaska now) and Tom Dunker (maybe alive in Pa) BOTH had to use the garden hose technique to find their dead hogs.

Varmint Hunter sponsored a match in Southern Michigan I think billed as the North East Championship. It is where I first saw a 30br being used. Two guys had one, they pretty much told the rest of us the match was over, because they showed up. There was a group of 15 or so of us who went from PA. No flags allowed and it was all at 200 yards. The target had a bunch of little tiny animals each with a dot in them, which got you extra points. In custom I shot my 6PPC and a cheap Savage .223 in factory. I won first in Custom, second in Factory and first in the 2 gun agg. The payout for the 3 told just a few bucks short of 1000.00. The locals did not congratulate me, lol.

SWEET

I entered a local Rotary Club match many years ago and the same thing happened - these two guys from another local club arrived and said the same thing - in a manner as to keep better shooters from entering. I still enjoy "their" Remington 700, as one of the prizes, but seeing them eat "crow" was priceless. It is nice to not have a reputation to live up to.

Great subject - Varmint Hunter Magazine. I have quite a few, still.
They did a fine job in varied subjects.
I learned quite a bit, and many articles of decade+ ago are still relevant.
Reading this mag definitely caused me to start buying (more) rifles.
Here's an article I wrote in 2009 on the 6mmAR rifle and cartridge.
Shooting PD's in SD & ND.

Hillsdale? I shot the last 2 matches they had there before the match was then moved to Wabash,Indiana. They still have a match or two there with relatively the same targets. Some of the same crowd still shoot the match. I haven't shot there for several years but still get the notices.WD

Edit:I Think it was called the Midwest Regional.(?)

A couple of years ago I went back 2 years to a match there. Not many shooters, maybe 9 or 10. I won both times, they obviously were not excited to see me. The fellow running it and 1 other gentleman spoke with me, the others glared. I have relatives in the area but I doubt I go back to a shoot but I am glad they still have matches . If you go there to shoot here is a tip. No flags allowed but when you feel that quartering tail wind coming over you right rear shoulder....do NOT shoot.
Yes I think your correct on the name, the first year it was a really good match.

Apparently, keeping a print magazine going is a monumental task, what with the internet and ready answers to about any question asked (RIP Precision Shooting too). Personally, I much prefer a print magazine to settle into my chair with a cup of whatever pleases me for an hour or so, and my hounds laying nearby. And NOT staring into a monitor.

I, along with many here, really miss TVHM. Seeing the latest issue in my mailbox was a moment of joy.
If I remember right, the range and the jamboree kept the magazine afloat for several years before the magazine drug them both to bankruptcy. The jamboree was amazing.

I was a member for years but never submitted an article. Still have all my issues of VHA & Precision Shooting magazine around here somewhere in this mess.
