Varmint caliber ideas?

6 XC

105's at 3250 with R#17 out of a 31" barrel, very, very accurate, easy to tune, and most important....longer barrel life than your 243 by a LONG shot.

I shot a 6 BRX on dog towns with the following results with H335

55's at 4130
60's at 3900
70's at 3650
These were the accuracy nodes where I was shooting bug holes. H335 gives very long barrel life in this case.

Hi, try any hunting rifle you have in any caliber with varmint loads. It is just fun to experiment with cartridges not associated with varmint hunting. I have shot pd's with 17 cal. thru 375 H&H and it was fun trying to work up loads for varmints. I also had a lot of fun shooting them with a S&W model 29 with 8 inch barrel in 44 mag. It works very well to about 200 yards. I know this doesn't answer your question directly but may be some food for thought.

I somewhat do that now instead of a 22lr i use a ar15 in 9mm for under 100 yards. Ive been thinking of using my 3030 winchester. Load them up with 110gr hollowpoints and go to town out to 300 yards. I was thinking of this cause i have 2k 3030 brass and 1k 110gr sierra hollowpoints.

So i have a 204 220swift 223 22250 243 basic calibers for varmint hunting. Im looking for something different to do. Any ideas?
Im throwing a couple ideas
Another 220 swift
20vt
30br

I have most of those and am a 220 Swift fan. Can't have too many of those. What about a 17? I have 17 Remington and Fireball. I might now be leaning towards favoring the Fireball.

I realize this is a highly specialized tool for the nasty armadillo and for laughs (which it excels at).
.45 Acp pistol with brace. Also equipped with the Walmart fish dipper brass catcher.

Finally got to hit PD's with the 6TCU repeater this weekend, fireform load 70 Nosler varmageddon 3050 FPS 27" 8 twist, accurate and pops them real good. Full load is 3300+ 300K RPM and pops 'em real real good.

My 6TCU will be ready very soon. Can not wait to find out which powder works the best!

I really liked the 6.5 Grendel idea, but with a twist. A 6mm Grinch, its a Grendel necked down to 6mm and is being pushed by Bart Sauter of Bart's bullets. Talk to Bart he has all the dope. You could even do it in an AR platform.

They only thing that tops that is a 220 Swift AI.

I did not think it would make that much of a difference but it did.

What are u shooting out of it?
I pretty much decided to build another 220 swift but was thinking of using heavy bullets

My 16 twist I shoot 53gr Vmax's my 14 twist 69gr Sierra's and my 12 twist the 77gr Sierra's. The case holds 50gr + of powder when fully formed, so between that and the sierra's short bearing surface plus sending the 77's 4000 fps + "I won't say for the 69's and 53's you won't believe me anyways" it is a great stress reliever, for me anyways not so much for the recipient.

I own the reamer so what I do is once a year in the slow season, I trim 1/2 inch off they end of they barrel and cut a fresh throat, they all have somewhere between 800 to 1000 shots through them when I do this, they are not shot out but I like to start the season off with a nice tight chamber. The way I profiled the barrels I can do this up to 6 times before chucking them.

PS: They are Savages so it really makes it easy to accomplish this.

I would want two rifles. 17 HMR or 17 WSM rimfire for inside 150, and a fast .22 caliber for out to 500. I've been very impressed with the 22 Dasher. It is easy to fire-form (just neck down to .22) and shoots flatter than a 6 BR out to 500. Many loads available. And I've converted older 6BR brass for 22 Dasher varmint duties. Don't think you really need anything bigger than a 22 Dasher for typical varmints. Noticeably less recoil than a 6mm shooting 100-115gr bullets.

Here is a good article on the 22 Dasher: http://www.accurateshooter.com/guns-of-week/tennessee-tack-driver/

Best Option: a 6mm Dasher with the 105 Berger Hybrids at 3000+fps. They somehow, seem to be winning more 600/1000yd matches than anything else the past several years.
